The history of the name The Rattler

Wondering how the newsletter got its name? Here’s the story! “There has always been friendly rivalry between the two camps: in tennis, softball, fishing, watersports. Early camp newspapers contain many joking comments about the other camp. An early camper’s poem compares the two

journals:

Back in the day, over at Deephaven Camp

Every Saturday night

They read a caustic paper

Which they call the “Barque and Bight”

Camp Rockywold is much younger,

And that is why, they say,

Their sheet is called “The Rattler”

For it is only meant for play.”

(Roots & Recollections: A Century of Rockywold-Deephaven Camps by Megan Thorn)

We decided to honor that tradition by naming our digital newsletter The Rattler—a nod to the past and a way to keep you in the loop today!

Ice Harvest

Every winter since the late 1800s, long after the summer guests have departed, a ritual takes place at RDC – the harvesting of lake ice. Once the lake freezes, our staff measures the ice growth daily and prepares the equipment. When the ice becomes 12” thick (usually in late January) the work begins. It’s a fascinating process that connects us to our history and keeps this time-honored tradition alive.

The lake is now frozen and the preparations have started. Stay tuned for updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the ice harvest on our social media.
