News You Don't Want to Miss!
A New Year at RDC
As we welcome the New Year, we want to send our thanks to all of you who make RDC such a special place. Though the lake is quiet and Camp is resting under winter’s cover, our thoughts are already drifting toward sunny days, familiar faces, and the simple joys of summer on Squam.
The start of a new year brings fresh energy, new plans, and plenty of excitement for the season ahead. We’re deeply grateful for our guests, families, and friends who continue to be part of the RDC community year after year.
From all of us at RDC, we wish you a happy, healthy New Year filled with warmth, peace, and lots of reasons to smile. We can’t wait to welcome you back to camp soon.

Annual Ice Harvest at RDC
Every winter, long after our summer guests have headed home, a special tradition continues at RDC—the annual ice harvest. Dating back to the late 1800s, this time-honored ritual begins once Squam Lake freezes over. Our crew measures the ice thickness daily and prepares the equipment, waiting patiently until the ice reaches about 12 inches thick (typically in late January) before harvesting begins. It’s a remarkable process that connects us to RDC’s history and keeps an old camp tradition alive.
Right now, the ice is measuring about 7 inches, and we’re keeping a close eye on conditions—based on past years, we’re likely still a couple of weeks away, weather permitting. Be sure to follow along on our social media for updates and behind-the-scenes looks at the ice harvest, and check out the live webcam at Point of View on Deephaven for real-time views of Squam Lake at RDCwebcam.

Statement of Purpose
At the September Shareholders Meeting, Shareholders approved a revised Statement of Purpose that reflects who we are and what we strive to offer our community:
“RDC's purpose is to provide a restorative vacation experience where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the company of family and friends in a place defined by its historic character and extraordinary natural beauty. RDC fosters a community that values respect, simplicity, continuity, and environmental responsibility.”
To fulfill this purpose, RDC follows these guidelines:
- Preserve the essence of what has made the place unique, especially the extraordinary natural setting.
- Continue to be a responsive enterprise, seeking to improve services and facilities to meet the needs of our community through the careful and sensitive adaptation of traditional operations.
- Ensure that persons of all backgrounds who cherish nature can find enrichment on our shores, in a place where coming together and being alone are equally respected.

Building Project Update
We’re excited to share an update on one of our ongoing improvement projects at RDC! This off-season, Greenwood Lodge is getting some thoughtful upgrades designed to enhance comfort while preserving the character our guests love. The second-floor rooms are being updated with brand-new private bathrooms and some with balconies, while the first-floor rooms will receive refreshed, updated private bathrooms as well. The kitchenette is also getting an upgrade to better serve our guests.
In addition, we’ll be continuing bathroom and kitchenette improvements in select cottages, beginning early this spring. Work is also underway at our year-round administrative office, Roswell, as part of our energy-efficiency initiative, including new windows, a new furnace, and updated appliances. We look forward to sharing these improvements with you in the coming season.
