RDCK Newsletter

June 2025 | Vol 1 No 1

Welcome Message from RDCK CAO

Hello and welcome to the inaugural RDCK Quarterly Newsletter!

Over the past two years we at the RDCK have been hearing more and more from you, our residents, that the RDCK needs to be more accessible, improve our communication, and provide transparency regarding how we are providing the services you and your neighbours rely on every day.  In the most recent RDCK Strategic Plan, our Board of Directors also identified improved communication to the public as a key priority.

This newsletter is another step in that journey to meet your needs. It will update you on the happenings at the RDCK, important projects and initiatives, and provide you with an opportunity to learn more about what we do as your local government, serving over 60,000 people across a very large and diverse geography.

I hope you enjoy this first newsletter as we strive to improve our communication with you.

Stuart Horn

RDCK Chief Administrative Officer

Temporary Closure of Rosebery to Three Forks Regional Trail

The Rosebery to Three Forks Regional Trail (Galena Trail) has been temporarily closed effective April 22, 2025 between the cable car crossing and the Three Forks trail head. This closure is due to a significant slough of the riverbank that has affected the integrity of the existing bridge structure.

The Galena Trail cable car is also currently closed for public use. RDCK staff are diligently working to replace the bridge over the slough that has taken away a portion of the trail. This is currently a closed worksite and cannot be entered.

For the safety of our contractors and the public the cable car will be closed until further notice. We will provide further updates as soon as we have more information on the trail being open. Please respect all trail closure areas, signage and barriers.

Composting in the RDCK

Over the last two months, the RDCK has been promoting its regional composting system with a couple of fun videos focused on composting and composting correctly. Check out these videos which were financially supported by Columbia Basin Trust and the Province of British Columbia.

The RDCK has disposal and processing infrastructure to accept and turn organic waste into compost, diverting this material from our finite, regional landfills.

During regular hours of operations, customers can dispose of organic waste at the following four RDCK Waste Disposal Facilities.

  • Creston Landfill
  • Central (Salmo) Transfer Station
  • Grohman Narrows Transfer Station
  • Ootischenia Landfill

Nice work Tracy, way to use that Regional Composting System. You’re keeping waste out of landfills and turning it into something useful. Also, we love your vibe.

Small actions, big impact. Compost your scraps!

If you know Todd, you know he loves to craft and volunteer around town.

What doesn't he love? Finding glass and other garbage at the compost facility where he works. This is where your green bin goes. No fancy machines, just Todd and his co-workers. You can do your part by properly sorting your green bin, and help Todd end his shift on time.

Don't we all want more time to do what we love?

Small actions, big impact. Compost correctly!

Emergency Preparedness

If an evacuation is ordered, there may be very little time to respond. Being prepared helps reduce stress and allows you to act more safely and confidently when it matters most. Here are three simple steps you can take now to support your emergency readiness:

  1. Sign up for Voyent Alert! RDCK uses this emergency notification system to send you location-based alerts, orders and updates by text, email, phone call, or app. It is completely anonymous, and nothing is tracked or kept on file. Visit rdck.ca/emergencynotification to sign up or get information.
  2. Pack a Grab-and-Go Bag. Every household member including pets should have a kit with food, water, medications, ID, comfort items, and emergency contacts. Also gather important documents in an easy-to-access place.
  3. Complete a Home Emergency Plan Template. Use the PreparedBC template to map out how your household will respond to a disaster and fill it in with key contacts, evacuation routes, and essential items so you’re ready to act.
  4. Save the RDCK Emergency Information page. Bookmark rdck.ca/eocinfo in your browser so you can quickly find alerts, updates, and emergency details when you need them.

Find templates, packing lists, and emergency planning tools at rdck.ca/householdpreparedness and at PreparedBC
