Area D Community Planning Conversations

The RDCK is inviting residents of Electoral Area D to participate in a series of community planning conversations this summer as part of the Area D Community Planning Project. The goal of this project is to create new opportunities for community land use discussions between the RDCK and Area D Community members - to learn about planning tools and to listen to the community's needs regarding land use. With community direction, the RDCK planning department can work towards updating the Area D Comprehensive Land Use Bylaw while focusing on expanding planning tools such as zoning to additional communities that want them.

If you would like more information on the initiative and how you can provide your input or attend events, please visit our engagement page or contact the RDCK planning department.

Erickson Water Metering Project

The Erickson Water Metering Project will be ramping up during the summer months. The project is focused on installing water meters on all properties connected to the Erickson Water System in Electoral Area B. The entire project is fully funded through senior government grants and represents a major step forward in improving water management, identifying and reducing leakage, and protecting the long-term sustainability of the Arrow Creek water supply. Residents in the area should be aware of equipment working on Highway 3 from the intersection at 26th Ave. North through to the intersection at 33rd Ave. North. Traffic control will be in place. Please expect minor delays and use caution when driving in construction zones. The RDCK appreciates your patience and understanding.

The What We Heard Engagement Report for the Goat River Watershed Water Sustainability Planning project is now available.

This report brings together what was heard through engagement carried out in 2025 and into early 2026 regarding the Goat River Watershed Water Sustainability Planning. Input was gathered through a Water Values Survey (220 responses), six open houses in Canyon, Erickson, Kitchener, Creston, West Creston, and Wynndel (137 participants), Kitchen Table Conversations, the engage page, and a dedicated producer engagement initiative including on-farm visits with 15 producers. Together, these engagement streams reached a broad cross-section of residents, agricultural producers, and community members. Read the full report on our engage page to see what was shared.

As well, visit our engage page to join the mailing list and stay up to date on this project, including the Water Sustainability Planning Survey that is open for submissions and in-person events coming soon.

What does it take to get around the RDCK? This video explores transportation in rural regions. Challenges can include long distances, limited options, and the high cost of owning a personal vehicle. These barriers can affect residents' ability to access work, services, and community life.

The Rural Mobility Community Advisory Committee brings together community voices to explore collaborative, innovative solutions, and contribute to a transportation network that better reflects the needs of the rural communities.

Head to the Rural Mobility Engagement Page to learn more about this work and share "How could transportation in your community be improved?" - in the survey.

Emergency Support Services

This month, Emergency Support Services (ESS) Directors from across the RDCK gathered for an in-person meeting in Nelson, BC. While together, they shared regional updates including training opportunities, discussed ESS response operations ahead of wildfire season, and updated the group on community team activities in their areas.

Meetings like this help keep ESS teams across the region connected, coordinated, and ready to respond when communities need support. ESS Directors help coordinate volunteers and lead the set-up of reception centres during emergencies, supporting evacuees as they navigate available provincial services. In some cases, this can include short-term supports for immediate needs like accommodation, food, or clothing.

We need more people on our ESS teams. If you want to be part of a supportive, purpose-driven team, ESS is a great place to start and no experience is required. All training is provided.

Is your civic address registered in the RDCK database to ensure emergency services can quickly find you and potential evacuations are efficient?

All residences in the RDCK require a civic address that is registered in the RDCK database to ensure emergency services can quickly find you and potential evacuations are efficient. The RDCK is asking residents to be proactive and to confirm they have a correct address within the RDCK database. Residents should check their addresses using the RDCK webmap.

Take these steps to ensure your civic address is registered:

  1. Search your address on the RDCK Public Web Map - RDCK Public Web Map
  2. If your address is missing, review the Civic Addressing page to check requirements - Civic Addressing | Regional District of Central Kootenay
  3. Apply for a civic address or request a correction - Addressing_Application-TEMPLATE.pdf

Completed applications can be emailed to plandept@rdck.bc.ca or sent by mail to the main office at Box 590, 202 Lakeside Drive, Nelson, BC V1L 5R4 along with payment (cheque or money order). A fee of $75.00 is required per address.

It is a crucial step that supports safer, faster emergency response. Take a moment to confirm your address today.
