THREE-TIME RDGA CHAMP TREVOR SLUMAN
WINS FIRST TITLE on PGA TOUR'S CHINA CIRCUIT
|
|
|
Three-time RDGA District Championship winner Trevor Sluman holds the 2019 Sanya Championship trophy after winning the PGA Tour China Series event on April 6.
|
Between 2014 and 2016,
Pittsford native
Trevor Sluman was the local amateur golfer to beat, winning three consecutive titles in the
RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial.
Shortly after winning his third District title, at Ridgemont Country Club in the summer of 2016, Sluman, the nephew of PGA Tour great and 1988 PGA Championship winner Jeff Sluman, declared his professional status. Over the next couple of years, Sluman played in various professional mini-tours, while also attempting to qualify (unsuccessfully) for the PGA Tour through the Web.com Tour qualifying process.
Last year, Sluman began a different approach to PGA Tour membership - playing in the Tour's satellite circuit, the PGA Tour Series-China. Since joining that Tour, he has enjoyed some success, posting a few top-10 finishes. Last weekend, however, that changed.
On Saturday, April 6, following a third-round, 6-under 66 to take a two-shot lead over Matt Gilchrest, Max McGreevy and Michael Perras, Sluman was declared the winner of the 2019 Sanya Championship,
in part due to the tragic death of 28-year-old Malaysian professional golfer Arie Irawan on Sunday. Sanya Championship tournament officials elected to cancel the final round of the PGA Tour Series-China tournament, declaring 54-hole leader Trevor Sluman the 2019 champion.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the RDGA, its members, staff and board of directors all send our congratulations to Sluman on his biggest professional victory to date.
