About Women's History Month!

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

MIGHTY LITTLE GIANT Marlon Wade Jr.!

Marlon Wade born on February 27, 2014 at 27 weeks 6 days weighing 2lbs 0oz and 11inches.

Marlon fought for his life in the NICU for 143 days. His pain has truly pushed me into my purpose and I honor his fight with everything that I do. I truly gave birth to the strongest person that I know, and I love him beyond this lifetime.

California Black Birth Equity Summit

DATE CHANGE!

California Black Birth Equity Summit.

The date has been changed and will now be taking place

August 28-29, 2023, in Los Angeles, CA (virtual and in-person).

This hybrid summit will bring together diverse, multidisciplinary stakeholders (clinicians, nurses, birth workers, policy experts, public health leaders, philanthropists, and community advocates) to collectively move from awareness of racial inequities in perinatal outcomes to action and accountability for Black birthing families in California.

“Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy!”

​In light of the steadily alarming rise of maternal mortality in the U.S., which recent data shows has been exacerbated by the pandemic; and amidst growing cases of clear neglect in care in hospital systems immediately after labor and delivery, BMMA continues to highlight and center culturally-congruent practices with a focus on Black Midwifery care and full-spectrum Black-led Doula care as sound, evidence-based solutions. Most importantly, these are practices and solutions that incorporate the true needs, wants and desires of Black women and birthing people.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) just shared its 2023 RWJF Culture of Health Prize call for applications! This year, RWJF is relaunching the Prize with a focus on celebrating community-led solutions that are breaking down the barriers to health and wellbeing caused by structural racism and other forms of discrimination (even if communities don’t call it that). The Prize will recognize up to 10 communities with an unrestricted $250,000 award and national recognition.

RWJF will award this year’s Prize to selected communities that are:

• Addressing structural racism and other structural injustices to create conditions that advance health equity.
• Committing to sustainable policy, systems, environmental, and cultural changes.
• Working alongside partners across sectors, and elevating the expertise and solutions held by people with firsthand experiences of health inequities.
• Engaging in cultural work that celebrates community and envisions and advances a more just future.
• Making the most of available community resources and fostering sustainability.
• Measuring and sharing qualitative and quantitative indicators of progress in culturally relevant ways.

Amgen Health Equity Challenge



Amgen has recently launched a Health Equity Challenge. The Challenge supports community-based, non-profit organizations that are advancing health equity among historically under-represented communities through unique, innovative approaches that demonstrate action, measurability, scalability, and sustainability. The 2023 Health Equity Challenge will focus on increasing the utilization of culturally competent navigation services for Black Americans with cardiovascular disease in Florida. The Challenge will award up to $500,000 in total to eligible nonprofit organizations.

Challenge finalists will be formally announced at the Amgen Health Equity Summit in April 2023! Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions and to submit applications. 

To recognize and promote excellence in nursing care of mothers and babies, March of Dimes is offering $10,000 scholarships generously supported by pampers!
