New Year, New Content
Professional Development Website Updates
We are always working to help you better navigate our website. To this end, please take a look at the new and updated content we've added to the different landing pages.

"Meet our Staff - DIEEC Professional Development Instructors" - Now, you can learn more about our instructors by clicking on this sub-header under the tab "Professional Learning."

"Training Calendar" - Speaking of our instructors, the training calendar now includes an asterisk that indicates workshops taught by DIEEC staff.

"Curriculum Approval" - If you are trying to find out how to get your curriculum approved, look no further. We've created a separate tab for curriculum approval - it's right next to "Quality Assured" on the main menu.

"Scope and Sequence" - We've made it easier for you to develop your professional development plan by providing a "Scope and Sequence" process. This process outlines what professional development comes next based on the level and the age group you are teaching.

Professional Development Calendar - A Focus on Social and Emotional Wellness

We are offering many opportunities this winter to take our new workshop, "Promoting Social and Emotional Wellness Plus: Teaching Tools for Life to Maximize Children's Potential." Keep in mind that PLUS means following up coaching is included as a part of the workshop.

We know that classroom management is more difficult when children display challenging behavior. Often this behavior is because they lack a particular skill. During this training, you will learn about the six "protective factors" that promote resilience. The more resilient people are, the better we are able to overcome adversity in our lives.

Research shows that these "protective factors" are skills in this training developed through various teaching methods. When targeted teaching strategies are intentionally built into the classroom environment and daily activities, it helps prevent children from displaying challenging behavior by giving them tools they can refer to when approached with a difficult situation.

Each two-hour session focuses on two of the skills necessary for building social and emotional wellness. Participants will reflect on how the skill has been implemented in their own lives then explore ways to teach the skill to their students through daily interactions, environment, and planned activities. Each part of the training includes small projects where participants will create environmental supports or activities that target the six skills and specific effective teaching practices.

You also will have the opportunity to participate in two small group coaching sessions as a follow-up to the six hours of professional development. Educators will choose a goal related to social and emotional learning. With the support of the coach, you create an action plan with opportunity to share your progress during the four-hour sessions.

You will receive ten quality assured hours by taking this training.

Ezion Fair Christian Community Academy
A Heart and Soul for Early Care and Education
Upon meeting Pastor Curry, the director of Ezion Fair Christian Academy, it becomes quickly apparent he is an educator driven to do better for young children. "The foundation sets the tone for children's love of learning," said Curry. "Our heart is to appropriately expose our children to 'better.'"

And better is reflected in every detail at Ezion Fair Christian Academy. First, Pastor Curry is passionate about early childhood education. "This is my heart," adds Pastor Curry. "I believe every child is unique and deserves individualized care balanced with helping him/her feel a part of something bigger."

Located in the Southbridge community in Wilmington, the academy serves infants to preschool ages, and runs a school-age program. The expansive property includes both a church and a state-of-the-art Wholeness Life Center, housing the program's seven classrooms.

The Wholeness Life Center is the fruition of the Pastor's vision to create a place that ministers to the "whole" person in a "whole" context - socially, emotionally and physically. The facility includes early child care classrooms, adult learning classrooms, a dance studio, and a gymnasium. Additionally, the center is equipped with the most up-to-date technology. The early child care classrooms each include a smartboard to expand and build upon the staff's teaching capabilities.

The staff makes the "better" the Pastor speaks about come to life. According to Sue Taylor, the Delaware Stars TA, the teachers are what makes this program so unique. "Each staff member has a genuine love for children."

"Our relationship with Delaware Stars allows us to invest in the teachers," said Pastor Curry. "Because of Delaware Stars, we have continuity in our staff."

There also is continuity in the children's learning experience because of the staff's use of HighScope curriculum. "The curriculum guides our teachers in developing a daily activities schedule to support the children's natural desire to be active learners," said Pastor Curry.

As you leave the Wholeness Life Center, there is a laminated sign of all of Pastor Curry's favorite quotes. One of them is "Quality outdoes Quantity."  No wonder this program aligns so well with Stars.

The QRIS Revision Advisory Council met in early December to discuss the relationship between early childhood initiatives across the state and the Stars revision and to provide feedback on the revision work to date. The QRIS Revision Leadership Team and Delaware Academy for School Leadership (DASL) partners conducted initial work to identify key concepts that should be captured in each domain for the revised Stars.

The group will reconvene in early January to continue discussions of how to ensure that the components of the revised Stars align with best practices and meet provider needs.

Please continue to direct questions to John Fisher-Klein.
