Hepatitis Awareness Month

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month and we're bringing you the facts. May 19 is Hepatitis Testing Day. Our goal is to shed light on hepatitis and raise awareness around testing, treatment and options available for support.

Our Medical Director and founder, Justine Waldman will be answering hepatitis related questions the public submits in collaboration with our friends at Southern Tier Aids Program. To submit questions, email contact@reachmed.org before May 20th. Follow us on social media for the zoom link coming soon!

Check out the CDC's Hepatitis Facts:

  • There are several different viruses that can cause hepatitis; the most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
  • Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C are leading causes of liver cancer in the United States.
  • Both hepatitis A and hepatitis B are preventable with safe and effective vaccines, and hepatitis C is curable with prescribed treatment.
  • About 66% of people with hepatitis B are unaware of their infection and about 40% of people living with hepatitis C do not know they are infected.
  • Getting tested is the only way to know if you have hepatitis A, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.

Research at REACH

The research team has been hard at work as their Community Opioid Response Evaluation project is nearing completion. The project, which is funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, is a comprehensive program evaluation that is being conducted in collaboration with research partners from Weill Cornell Medicine.

Our research team has been planning and implementing a mixed methods evaluation, and has included qualitative and quantitative data collection tools. The next step in this project is to administer a satisfaction survey to all patient facing staff at REACH. Along with this, our evaluation partners continue to analyze data previously collected from REACH patients on their experiences receiving health care services at REACH.

The research team is also working in conjunction with researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine to help conduct qualitative interviews for a study on hepatitis C treatment. The purpose of this study is to understand the factors that individuals face in deciding whether to seek hepatitis C treatment, and where to seek it. The interviews aim to gain insight on people’s opinions about different types of doctors and medical settings for hepatitis C. The data collected from these interviews will be synthesized and shared with REACH so we can improve our services based on feedback.

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion

Our work with the LEAD program continues. LEAD is an evidence-based systems approach program that empowers LEAD officers to redirect individuals engaged in misdemeanor crimes to community-based services as opposed to incarceration. Our shared mission is to improve law enforcement responses to issues rooted in substance use, mental illness, poverty and homelessness.

This public safety initiative is a collaborative effort between the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, REACH Medical, Office of the Mayor, Tompkins County Public Defender and District Attorney Offices, Ithaca Police Department, and the Community Outreach Team at Family and Children’s Service of Ithaca.

To learn more, please join us via zoom on Tuesday, May 31. LEAD members and community partners will introduce the program and answer questions from the public.

For questions regarding the LEAD program in Ithaca, NY, contact Travis Brooks, ithacalead@cityofithaca.org or call (607) 272-3622.
