Under Construction - Camden Commons and ADU
|
In November, REACH broke ground on one Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Pleasanton and began renovations on the newly acquired Camden Commons property in Livermore, expanding our capacity to house 8 new REACH residents. A special thank you to our donor community for supporting our mission. It is your generosity that has set these projects in motion. We eagerly anticipate providing more updates on our progress in the upcoming new year.

Give the Gift of Independence this Holiday Season
|
Together, we are building inclusive communities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live and thrive independently within existing Tri-Valley neighborhoods.
Our REACH residents cultivate connections with their neighbors and acquire essential skills for day-to-day independent living, such as collecting mail from the mailbox or setting out their recycling.
Our homes are tailored to accommodate the individual needs of our residents, fostering confidence and autonomy. We need the help of our community to turn our new properties into welcoming homes. Your gift directly supports these efforts by ensuring that our local community members with I/DD have a safe, affordable, and accessible home.
As the year draws to a close, we invite you to consider making a donation to REACH. Every heartfelt gift, big or small, has a meaningful impact on the lives of current and future residents!
Did you know? REACH services are provided exclusively through board volunteers, private donors, fundraising, and grants.

What’s in a Name? The Power of Our Language
|
Blog Author: Diane Warzecha
There is little dispute that our names carry significance. The majority of us have had the experience of being called by alternate versions of our names, whether misspelled or wrong altogether. The impact of this can range from minor annoyance to truly feeling unimportant or devalued.
That said, we also know that language is constantly evolving to adapt to societal changes, bringing many new words and terms to the existing vocabulary. If this were not the case, there would be many words and terms missing from our modern vocabulary, including train, automobile, airplane, television, gigabyte, modem, and even mobile phone – words that have been created to reflect modern technological advances. As mentioned in the September blog post of Building Community Through Conversation, language matters, especially when speaking about differences and disabilities. It is crucial to recognize that these terms and descriptors have changed significantly over the years. The current emphasis is on choosing language that highlights what a person can do (their abilities) versus what they cannot do (their limitations). This shift not only empowers the disabled individual, it also switches the lens through which others view that individual and may lead to opportunities for disabled individuals that were not possible given the former “lens.”

T-RADD Holiday Celebration
|
This month, T-RADD hosted its annual Holiday celebration, marking the grand finale of the last Special Olympic sports event of the year—floor hockey. For over 15 years, REACH has sponsored this cherished tradition by generously providing all the party essentials. A special thank you to co-coaches Kathy and Mike D'Onforio, for opening their home as the venue for the annual gathering!
The Holiday party serves as a festive tribute, recognizing the accomplishments of athletes who participated in any 2023 sport, whether it be floor hockey, basketball, softball, or track and field. Every year, the standout moment of the party occurs when Santa makes his arrival. Athletes have the opportunity to mingle, get to know one another and enjoying the end of another great season. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for coaches to thank the families, support staff and anyone else who is instrumental in getting athletes to practices and competitions. The event is filled with lots of hugs, smiles and even some “I love you’s” exchanged amongst the entire group. The T-RADD teams are looking forward to 2024 sporting events and we can't wait to share their success in the year ahead!
