Read Across NCS 2025 - Frequently Asked Questions

How does this work?

  • In elementary chapel on Wednesday, October 29th, Mr. Brown disappeared! And, we learned that he has been mysteriously stranded somewhere out there in a wooded wilderness. This year's first Read Across NCS campaign is based on Daniel Defoe's "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe". But, we've rewritten it as "The Adventures of Robinson Crusader" and our goal for the week is students helping to navigate Mr. Brown back to the school!
  • Starting on the evening of Wednesday, October 29th, you are invited to begin reading through "The Adventures of Robinson Crusader" -- an adventure that will run through Wednesday evening, November 5th. This year, instead of counting reading minutes, we are asking that you simply register that you spent time reading with your students. You will register using the link found in the email that you will receive.
  • Each day at 8:30am, a new Robinson Crusader adventure video will be released at the school's YouTube page (NCS-Plus.com, but you can access the specific video by going through ReadAcrossNCS.com.) At the end of each daily video, you and your student will be given a choice. This daily choice involves Mr. Brown getting out of some sort of trouble and making his way back to school! Think of it like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure odyssey in video form!
  • Once you have read the daily reading, you are able to 'vote' using the link found in the 8:30am email. You will choose between two options and, on the following morning, we'll tabulate the votes and Mr. Brown's resulting actions will follow the course that the students make collectively.
  • At the end of the week, we'll either get Mr. Brown back or he will remain lost!

How does my family read "The Adventures of Robinson Crusader?" Below, there are two versions of Robinson Crusader: one basic version and another advanced version. Most students and families will want to read the basic version. Below, there are links so that you can either read your chosen version online or download the basic version. In the original, there were some inappropriate themes (slavery, alcohol abuse, misogyny, cannibalism, etc.), antiquated cultural references (colonialism), and levels of violence that might offend. So, Mr. Brown has gone through it, edited it for those offensive qualities, abridged it in certain instances, and simplified the language to what he perceived to be two different elementary reading levels. Additionally, in the basic version, at the end of each daily reading, there are questions that you can discuss in your family if you wish.

Is this required? Is there a grade for participating? This is all for fun! This is not required and no grade will be taken. In fact, you may choose to read an altogether different adventure if you wish. Or, you may choose not to participate.
