President's Message

Dear Members and Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well and feeling celebrated for the essential role you play in patient care and public health.

This fall has been filled with momentum and meaningful moments. Several members of our Board of Directors recently attended the ADHA Annual Conference, where we gained insight into their updated strategic plan and how they are working on behalf of our profession—and by extension, TDHA.

I also had the honor of visiting Blinn College to speak with both first- and second-year dental hygiene students about the importance of mentorship, professionalism, and association membership. These future professionals remind us why our work matters and how we can shape the next generation of leaders.

Save the Date: TDHA Annual Conference 2026

The countdown has begun! The TDHA Annual Conference is scheduled for

 “Glitz, Grit, and Glamour”

It’s sure to be a rodeo-good time!

Fall Board of Directors Meeting Recap

Cedar Park, Texas | October 16–18, 2025

We gathered for our Fall BOD Meeting with a full heart and festive spirit. The weekend included:

  • Friday Night Meet & Greet hosted by our amazing GADHA component
  • Guest speaker, Vanessa Schmeltz from GLO Science, sharing whitening trends and tools
  • Pumpkin decorating, StrengthsFinder team-building, and a chili bar served up by none other than award-winning chili chef—Rory Randolph

We were also honored to host lobbyists, Denise Rose and Taylor Cummings, who led a strategic discussion on upcoming legislative priorities and advocacy strategies for the 2025 session. These policy updates, paired with strategic planning, position TDHA to protect and advance the dental hygiene scope of practice in Texas.

A heartfelt thank-you to all who donated to our Community Service Blanket Drive. Your generosity reflects the heart of our profession—servant leaders lifting communities.

Statewide Connection & Gratitude

To all TDHA components—we would love to connect with you!

Please send us your upcoming event dates, so we can plan visits. You are the lifeline to dental hygienists across our state and your engagement keeps us strong and united in fierce synergy.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Board of Directors—including our component trustees, committee directors, and the executive board. Your time, dedication, and passion are deeply appreciated. Though your work is voluntary, you serve with unwavering commitment to our profession, supporting both our members and non-members alike.

Grace & Grit: The Heart of Leadership

As we look ahead, let us be reminded that our work calls for both grace and grit.—

Grace to lead with empathy, understanding, and professionalism, and grit to stand firm in our advocacy, service, and leadership.

Let us move forward with unity, purpose, and fierce synergy. I encourage each of you to join us as a member, consider stepping into leadership, and help elevate our profession—because together, we are stronger.

The Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association remains the only organization solely dedicated to protecting, advocating, mentoring, and advancing the dental hygiene profession in Texas.

Thank you for all that you do—and for who you are.

With sincere appreciation,

Pamela Randolph, RDH

Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association President

Hygienist’s Role in Expanding Access

Dental hygienists play a critical role in the delivery of oral health care services. Their expertise in preventive care, patient education, and community outreach positions them as key contributors in efforts to improve access to dental care, particularly among underserved populations. Many hygienists participate in school programs, mobile

clinics, and public health initiatives that bring dental care directly to communities lacking traditional dental offices. They provide services such as oral health assessments, charting dental conditions, prophylaxis, scaling and root planning, fluoride applications, dental sealants, oral hygiene/nutritional counseling, and screening for other diseases like oral cancer, periodontal disease, and other systemic diseases. By focusing on education and preventive services, hygienists reduce the incidence of dental disease, decreasing the need for more costly and complex procedures.

Did You Know?

A recent survey of dental hygienists showed that TX hygienists are interested in working in additional practice settings. In Texas, current statutes (laws) allow dental hygienists who practice dental hygiene as part of a teledentistry dental service, to practice in alternate settings under the general supervision of a dentist. These settings

include a nursing home, a patient’s home, a school, a hospital, a state institution, a public health clinic, or another approved institution.

Hygienists working in multiple practice settings increases the capacity of the dental workforce and improves accessibility.

Their efforts contribute to:

 Lower rates of dental caries and periodontal disease

 Improved overall health outcomes, as oral health is closely linked to systemic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease

 Reduced disparities in access to care

 Enhanced quality of life for individuals and communities

Are you interested in practicing outside of the traditional dental office?
