In the Spotlight

"Nature, specifically the raw geology of the Southwest's canyon country, has a great influence on my sculpture. It is through stone that I explore my reverence for the natural world." -Petro Hul

PETRO HUL

Petro Hul has been a stonemason, a foundryman, a toolmaker of meticulous craftsmanship, and ran the shop at a university sculpture department. But it is his unique and endearing talent for teaching that allows him to share his vast knowledge of stone and tools with students. He is part of the core teaching staff at the annual workshops at the Sax Studios in Rinconada, NM and is an instructor at the Marble/marble Workshops in Marble, Colorado. He is a Master Sculptor.

"I enjoy free carving, with only a stone

and a preconceived notion as my guide."

Free Carving, also referred to as Direct Carving, allows an artist to move slowly and methodically through the process of carving, allowing every move to influence the next move, keeping the general idea in mind while allowing the particulars to sort themselves out. Petro's tool marks left on the stone are indicative of the removal process that shaped the sculptures.

Some of these works are multi-element sculptures that may be interpreted as steep-walled gorges or architectural constructions. Their ambiguity invites the viewer to spend time and contemplate.
