Stone Carver and Maker of Meaning
by Rebekah Powers
I caught my first glimpse of Lucas Beau Leone's work at the opening of Stone Sculpture in the Landscape, held in the sculpture gardens of TJ Mabrey during her annual Open Studio event in October 2024.
A young talent stood amongst the seasoned contemporaries, his work inviting further inquiry. His monolith OUR STARS AND STRIPES ‘24 is a timely statement by the artist. His words add the cultural and personal context for this piece, suggested to him by the stone itself. Leone notes OUR STARS is “a soft emanation, resulting in hours of work to create a cargo of symbols."
The artist includes several political motifs, symbols for the seasons with the oscillation between poles and genders, the cardinal directions, and sensitive to the new cycle of leadership as Leone notes, "washes over the contours of America every four years."
Born in Marble, Colorado, Leone has been educated in the presence of being, has credentials from his life experience with a commitment to the story of beauty.
"I hope to explore, not conquer, and to walk with others through this strange time on this beautiful planet.” -Lucas Beau Leone
