As many of you know I had my gallbladder removed a couple of months ago and I have been rehabilitating. This has been the worst five months of my life. It not only took me down physically, but I haven’t been able to ride or do much of anything for that matter.

Well, I’m back and getting into mischief as usual! For instance, I recently bought a new Goldwing because I want to do some major touring, and I have a special place in my heart for Goldwings. In fact my first new bike was a 1977 Goldwing, and I put tons of miles on that bike. Also when I worked for Honda, I was very involved with the development of the Goldwing for many years.

As you know I love my Tiger, but as it turns out I haven’t been in a sane state of mind lately. Cyndy knows me so well and she just went along with my whim knowing the whole time it wouldn’t last. Just like every so many years when I get the urge to own another Harley and I go get one. Sure enough I always get rid of them and go back to my beloved Triumphs.

This time was no different. After putting about 250 miles on the Goldwing I decided it wasn’t for me. This time it came down to the footpeg position being about 7 or 8 inches forward of a standard bike and I wind up sitting more straight up. In this position I can’t weight the footpegs and feel every bump straight up my spine. Very quickly my back starts telling me “Nope!” Turns out my Tiger 900 GT Pro is actually more comfortable for me than the Goldwing which is renowned as the most comfortable bike made.

It is hard to believe how good it feels to be back riding! I rode my Bonneville T120 at the Los Angeles DGR ride and wow that was a fantastic ride and event! I love my two Triumphs, and I can’t give them a higher recommendation than they are the only bikes I have in my garage! I don’t know what I might add in the future but these two are here to stay.

You never know when something will come out of nowhere and stop you from riding so get there out and ride! My recent situation had me spending countless hours dreaming of riding and so many places I want to go. Now I have rides already planned with more to come. I simply love motorcycles and riding as well as motorcycle people!

There are lots of exciting things happening with So Cal Motorcycles, especially regarding off road bikes, so drop in and see what’s new. I look forward to seeing you there and on the road.

2025 Ducati XDiavel V4 First Ride

New V-4 motor dominates in Italy’s revamped sport cruiser.

Ten years after it was first launched on an unsuspecting motorcycle world at EICMA, Ducati’s XDiavel is back for a redo, and Gen 2 has left no stone unturned in the redesign. And much like the original XDiavel blew through the usual cruiser-segment tropes, this one’s looking to buck convention too; it’s a V-4.

Why not? Ducati entered the cruiser market on its own unorthodox terms with the Diavel back in 2011, and seeing as how that model inherited the 1158cc Granturismo V4 engine in 2022, it looked like the XDiavel was next in line for a revamp. For 2025 the X gets the new mill, a fresh aluminum frame, upgraded Brembo brakes, and more suspension travel, along with a host of other improvements; Ducati says nearly 90% of the 2025 bike’s components have been revised compared to the outgoing 1260 L-twin.

Of course the Bologna brand made it clear (again) that the two Diavels are distinctly different machines intended for different purposes. The Diavel V4, it says, is the “muscle roadster,” while the XDiavel V4 is a “sport cruiser,” with forward controls, a lazier rake, and lower seat.

Just to make sure we understood the design brief, Ducati flew us out to France to ride the new X on parts of the old Route Napoléon, which winds along the foothills of the Alps in a tangle of hairpin bends and staggering mountain views. Scraping pegs on winding hilltop lanes with a ridiculously scenic backdrop? Seems like the perfect way to test a new bike.
