The therapeutic action of psychoanalytic therapy and psychoanalysis has undergone significant changes in the last three decades. For many years, beginning with Freud and his colleagues, the essential therapeutic action was to make conscious what has been unconscious. The major approach was to focus on unconscious conflict and help the patient accept what had been repressed. In more recent years the therapeutic action is regarded as having multiple aspects. Today we think of multiple models, and analytic therapists and analysts recognize that there is more than one way of structuring what happens between therapist and patient. Different patients require different modes of engagement. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of how contemporary therapists and analysts work with the shifting views that have become prominent in our field.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast Freud's model of therapeutic action with contemporary psychoanalytic views.
  2. Demonstrate the differences in therapeutic action based on the patient's needs and the therapist's observations.
