CALL FOR PAPERS
Theme: Rethinking the US-Uganda Relations
The NUP-DC 2023 Convention program committee is pleased to invite paper submissions to help shape the discussions, policy proposals, strategies for the struggle and resolutions for our conference. The theme “Rethinking the U.S-Uganda Relations is a follow up on the deliberations at the 2022 U.S-Africa Summit.
The U.S-Africa Leaders’ Summit signaled an urgency for the United States to re-engage with Africa and prioritize their national interests, especially as China and Russia’s influence in Africa continues to grow. This followed the launch of a new strategy towards Sub Saharan Africa in August of 2022.
Museveni lobbied for foreign investors, trade and military aid at the summit where he positioned himself as a stabilizing force in East Africa despite the fact that his military has been a force of reckless destabilization, both at home and in the wider region.
The United States priority is their national interests and for the East African region, security and combating terrorism have been top of the agenda. This has resulted in the U.S overlooking human rights violations and atrocities committed by the Museveni regime in Uganda to forge a delicate mutually beneficial relationship.
This state of affairs requires change seekers to rethink their strategy towards the western world as a more viable alternative while remaining cognizant of their national interests.
Use the topics below to address, analyze or assess the theme.

Statement from The Convention Chairman
Greetings NUP Diaspora Delegates and friends,
The Washington DC NUP family is honored to be hosting the next conference in North America from August 10th to 14th 2023. I take this opportunity as Chairman of the NUP-DC 2023 Executive team, to invite you all to be part of this conference.
This conference will be a celebration of the hard work the NUP Diaspora and People Power movement is doing for the motherland in addition to the solidarity, commitment and support of friends worldwide.
Our conference venue in the Capital of the United States presents a unique opportunity to engage stakeholders that play a crucial role in the affairs of Uganda such as the Bretton Woods institutions, State Department, Congress, NGOs, investors and the Executive branch.
We are going to showcase the professionalism and excellence of the NUP Diaspora that brings a wealth of resources and expertise from business, politics, media, human rights, healthcare, education, foreign affairs, the arts among other talents which have made the struggle formidable and resilient.
Our delegates should expect to get re-energized, exposed to a wealth of knowledge and expertise as well as motivated towards the common goal of liberating Uganda from the shackles of authoritarian rule.
We plan to have vibrant policy debates and forums that will explore the current state of our country Uganda, the role the Diaspora can play as ambassadors of NUP and ways in which we can reshape Uganda’s economic, political and social landscape for the better.
We humbly request that you share the information about the conference with your members, peers, colleagues and well-wishers. Please register early for the conference or make a donation to support the team organizing the NUP-DC 2023 conference. If you have any suggestions on how best we can present the projects and initiatives in your communities please reach out to our team.
We look forward to hosting you in Washington DC to connect, network and celebrate with the NUP Diaspora family as we continue to play an integral role in the future of Uganda. The solutions that we advocate today will determine the future of Uganda.
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
