2023 Fall Public Works Academy

Who Should Attend

The CT Public Works Academy (PWA) provides education on those core competencies necessary to be successful members of the public works community. The PWA is also an excellent opportunity for updated information on the latest in technology and best practices for experienced employees who are new to professional development. Each module is taught by an instructor who is an expert in the subject matter.

When and Where

The PWA program is comprised of six (6) weekly sessions that will be held each Thursday in Storrs, CT. Classes will be held from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Participants must attend all six modules to receive credit for the Academy.

*Weekly classes will be held on Thursdays. Lunch will be provided.

A Supervisors' Orientation Session will be a 1-hour virtual information session, held via Zoom on April 13, 2023, at 11:00am. Participation is mandatory for the direct supervisor of each participant.

Training Overview

Each week at the Academy, participants will become familiar with different subject matter that is essential to working in Public Works. The following is an overview of the topics that will be covered each week:

Week 1: Communication Skills and Professionalism


Week 2: Operational Safety


Week 3: Roadway Fundamentals


Week 4: Chainsaw Safety and Storm Clean Up


Week 5: Work Zone Safety and Flagger Certification


Week 6: Winter Operations and Safe Snowplowing

  • Cost: $400.00 (includes course materials and lunch each week)



  • Cancellation/Refund Policy: The registration fee is refundable if notice of cancellation is received 48 hours prior to the start of the program. Registrants who are unable to attend and do not cancel in advance are subject to the registration fee. Substitutions may be made at any time. Please notify us of changes.
