Beginning therapists tend to go to supervisors with ethical questions at a very high frequency, and most experienced therapists know they need to seek consultation when facing ethical dilemmas. Because the literature on psychoanalytic supervision, especially in the domain of ethics, is quite limited, there is a need for meetings at which practitioners consider the unique and highly complex ethical problems that psychodynamic therapists may encounter. Rather than construing ethics as a set of rules of procedure, this conference anchors ethical questions within the general principles of the psychological and medical professions, placing clinical and supervisory choices within the broader humanistic goals that underlie the exploratory psychotherapies.
OBJECTIVES
After attending the program in its entirety, attendees will be able to:
- Enumerate five relevant general ethical principles of the helping professions.
- Make ethical choices within the relevant cultural contexts of the patient and/or the therapist.
- Define and apply the psychoanalytic concept of the moral or cultural “third."
- Designate four kinds of information to which patients are ethically entitled, despite psychoanalytic conventions recommending the analytic therapist be a “blank screen.”

Nancy McWilliams, PhD is a retired professor of clinical psychology at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She has a private practice in Lambertville, New Jersey. She is author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994, rev. ed. 2011), Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2004), which have become contemporary classics in the psychoanalytic literature. Her most recent textbook is Psychoanalytic Supervision (2021). Dr. McWilliams is also associate editor of both editions of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006, 2017). A former president of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association (APA), she has been featured in three APA videos of master clinicians. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Her books are available in 20 languages, and she has taught in 30 countries.
