JULY 9, 2020. ST. JOSEPH, MICH - Krasl Art Center (KAC) is happy to announce Outdoor Adult/Teen and Youth Art Classes* are here! To learn more visit the Education Page of KAC’s website: krasl.org/education/adult/classes/
 
Outdoor summer classes offer a safe way for students to explore their creativity in a wide range of mediums and class lengths. Classes will take place on KAC’s Oval Lawn and in KAC’s south parking lot on the corner of Lake Blvd. and Park St. All students will be spaced 6’ apart in tents (when not exploring the natural beauty of St. Joseph) and required to wear masks while class is in session. Courses begin July 20 and run through August 17, and range from $35 ($25 for Members) to $85 ($75 for Members). Registration will remain open though July 17. DRAWING AND PAINTING
CLASS CODE: AP5
(4) FRIDAYS, 10 AM - 12:30 PM
JULY 24 - AUGUST 14
TUITION: $85 / $75 MEMBERS, MATERIALS FEE: $15
Ages 13+
1 HOUSEHOLD PER TENT, 4 TENTS MAXIMUM
Learn the basics or take your skills to the next level in this drawing and painting class open to all skill levels! Artist Lea Bult will guide students as they paint under shaded tents on KAC grounds or walk to nearby scenic locations. A variety of disinfected drawing and painting media will be available for use.
 
COMPOSITION & DESIGN WITH ACRYLICS
CLASS CODE: AP6
(4) MONDAYS, 10 AM - 12:30 PM
JULY 20 - AUGUST 10
Ages 13+
TUITION: $85 / $75 Members, MATERIALS FEE: $15
Learn how to organize the elements of art into a strong and meaningful composition with artist Sharron Ott. This class will explore traditional theories while allowing for a great deal of freedom of expression. Students will learn how every aspect of a picture affects the whole as they paint with acrylics under shaded tents on KAC grounds. 
 
BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION WITH HANDMADE PAINTS
CLASS CODE: AP7
MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 9 AM - 12 PM
TUITION: $40 / $30 Members
Ages 13+
ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED
Learn how to use natural materials to create unique pigments with artist Sharron Ott! After sketching leaves and flowers on specially-coated paper, students will use their handmade pigments to add color and a classic quality inspired by traditional botanical illustrations.  
 
BATIK LANDSCAPES AND PATTERNS
CLASS CODE: AE1

Learn how to create vibrant batik images inspired by the summer landscape using paste-resist and colored dyes on fabric! Artist Ali Hansen will take you through this fun and messy process under shaded tents on KAC grounds.
 
FAMILY ART OUTSIDE
CLASS CODE: Y1-Y4
MONDAYS, JULY 20 - AUGUST 10, 1:30 - 3:30 PM

Have a fun, hands-on art experience on the Krasl grounds! Individuals or households will work under their own shaded tent as they create art projects to take home in just a few hours.
 
Y1: JULY 20- FIGURATIVE WIRE SCULPTURES
Ages 8-12 YRS
Learn to create and embellish wire armatures to create whimsical figurative sculptures! Heads will be sculpted out of air-dry clay and paper, fabric and mixed media will be used to make up the body.
 
Y2: JULY 27- ACRYLIC PAINT EXPERIMENTS
Ages 8-12 YRS
Learn how to use acrylic paint expressively as you wash, scrape, and splatter on canvas boards. Multiple techniques will be used to create images with depth and visual interest. 
 
Y3: AUGUST 3- ACTION PAINTING
Ages 5-7 YRS
Dress for mess as you learn to paint large abstractions by flinging, printing, and even blowing bubbles of water-based paints onto painting surfaces.
 
Y4: AUGUST 10- ACROBAT PAPER SCULPTURES
Ages 5-7 YRS
Create art that hangs from the ceiling! Participants will paint paper silhouettes of acrobats performing daring tricks to create colorful mobiles.
 
ART CAMPS TO-GO!
Krasl Art Center continues the Summer Camp To-Go Kits! These four (4) kits contain KAC Faculty-crafted lesson plans and all of the necessary materials to create them. A wide range of camps are available for ages 5-7 and 8-12 (but we promise to tell if older students want one too!). Art Camps to go are available until August 17.

KITTY PINCH - POT PLANTERS
CLASS CODE: CTG1
Tuition: $30 / $25 Members
Ages 5- 7 YRS
Campers will build a small bowl using the pinch method of construction and turn it into a fun, kitty-themed container that can be used as a planter. Underglazes will be used to add whiskers, stripes, eyes, and other details. Finished clay projects can be dropped off at the Krasl Art Center to be fired, a process that makes the clay strong and colors vivid.

FACE MUGS
Class Code: CTG2
Tuition: $30 / $25 Members
Ages 5yrs. to 7yrs.
Learn how to make a mug out of clay using the coil method! Then add funny facial features by creating simple shapes and adding details and texture. After sculpting, campers will use underglazes to create a colorful personality. Finished clay projects can be dropped off at the Krasl Art Center to be fired, a process that makes the clay strong, glossy, and food-safe.

JOINTED CLAY FIGURES

Tuition: $30 / $25 Members
Ages 8 - 12 YRS
Campers will learn how to sculpt a small human figure out of clay! Coil and other handbuilding techniques will be used to create a head, torso, and single-joint movable arms and legs. Campers will also add color and designs with underglazes. Finished clay projects can be dropped off at the Krasl Art Center to be fired, a process that makes the clay strong and colors vivid. KAC staff will assemble the clay figure with wire after it is fired.

MURAL MAGIC
Class Code: CTG4
Tuition: $60 / $50 Members
Ages 8 - 12 YRS
Create a mural on a 3’ x 4’ unstretched canvas to be displayed on the Krasl Art Center grounds! Campers will learn how to tell a visual story, transfer a small drawing to a large canvas, and paint vivid images with acrylic paints. Finished murals may be dropped off at KAC where they will be exhibited outdoors from August 10-16. This lesson plan is designed to be completed in 3 days. All materials are included.
