Join us for the 2023 ICBI Hackathon!
We would like to invite you to register for the upcoming ICBI 2023 Hackathon on Thursday August 24th and Friday August 25th, 2023. This will be an all day (8am-5pm) in-person event. While limited conflicts may be unavoidable, you should plan to set aside the whole day, 8am-5pm if you would like to participate. There will also be a mandatory primer event and team meet-and-greet the preceding Friday August 18th (though could be made up in exceptional circumstances). Over the course of the two day hackathon, teams will work together to analyze the complex phenotypes of autoimmune disease using single-cell sequencing data from human samples. Similar to previous years, winning teams will be announced at the ImmunoX annual retreat and awarded cash prizes!
While there are no restrictions on meeting as a team, the hackathon will be organized as an in-person event. However, if there are remote trainees/staff interested, please contact us separately for us to consider an accommodation. We will be assembling teams with diverse skill sets: immunologists, clinicians, data scientists, and software engineers. A reminder to those not aware, this hackathon involves a standardized computational environment and skills primer and which hopefully allow teams to complete and collaborate on tasks as a whole. That being said, it should be noted that the schedule of tasks leans computationally day 1 and more biologically day 2. Those with a computational research background should be prepared to engage in team leadership and education on day 1, while those with a biological background should be prepared to do the same the following day. Day 2 will end with a presentation of your biological reasoning (qualified with the computational analysis of day 1).
If you are interested in participating, please fill out this survey by June 16, 2023. Your responses will be used to group participants with complementary expertise. You will be connected with your tentative teammates in Slack in order to facilitate preliminary discussion of skills, roles, and goals prior to the primer and meet-and-greet on Friday, August 18. Note, all participants are required to have their own computer, and this primer will help participants prepare their computers for the tasks ahead (in either R or Python, whichever the team prefers).
Participants are not limited to ImmunoX labs, so feel free to share with other UCSF labs who may be interested. We also want to make it clear that this is a different data set from last year’s hackathon, so participation last year in no way prevents participation this year.
