March 1, 2019: Year 10; Edition 5
Hello, All ~

NOVA Open Registration is here once again, opening formally TONIGHT, MARCH 1, 2019, at 8PM EST time. This is a big moment for the NOVA Open, as months of effort by key staff and leads develop into an attendee rush to grab our most coveted registration items.

Perhaps most importantly, this year represents ... THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT! Amazing surprises are in store, everyone is going to be amped to the max, and it'll be an awesome time (though we probably still can't wait to turn that amp up to 11 next year).

As you prepare to register this evening, take time to look through our web cart ( novaopenstore.com). Pay special attention to the schedule, events and seminars we have available. Make a list and be ready to quickly add items when registration opens.

Want a SuperNOVA? Put everything else on hold until you load, choose bag type, game, faction and shirt size -- then CHECK OUT! Return after you have it to register for everything else . . . that's how fast this upgrade goes. This is the coolest VIP bag program around (seriously), and it sold out in 6 seconds last year. The only other Swag opportunities at NOVA Open (which also sell out quickly) are the DwarfNOVA and First 400 Premium Swag.

Other fast-sellers: Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars Grand Championships, 40K Grand Tournament and Narrative events, 30K Horus Heresy, and our renowned hobby seminars, panels and reveals. In the seminar department, there are classes by several new instructors of note, a "pre-convention" intensive 3-day / 30-hour workshop taught by Roman Lappat of Massive Voodoo, and a brand new Banshee 2-Day workshop, as well. There is also a full suite of Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions events during the pre-con days (Monday & Tuesday), which is a pretty cool new addition! If you can't do the NOVA Open 2019, or want extend your stay to have a full fun week vacation in beautiful Washington, DC to end your summer, we've got you covered with gaming end caps on either side!

Finally, make sure you book your hotel room at the Renaissance before they too run out of room (follow link below). The Hyatt sold out a while ago, though they do have rooms available for the pre-con events. Any trouble booking, let us know: customerservice@novaopen.com.

It is impossible to cover all the awesome things that will happen at NOVA Open 2019 in one short intro, but RESEARCH & PREP are key.

Stay connected with the NOVA Open and you'll be the first to learn of changes, new events, expanding schedules and events, and so much more. How? Subscribe to the newsletter, follow us on Facebook and Twitter, check out the NOVA Open website.

Welcome to the 10th ANNIVERSARY NOVA Open!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
FEATURED EVENTS AT NOVA OPEN 2019
If you're a Games Workshop fan, the Warhammer Community team's article from this morning is almost a perfect summation of all the different things you can get into. Check it out HERE.

Thanks to our incredible growth and diversification over the last decade, the vast majority of events at the NOVA Open are in all the other sorts of gaming and hobby activities we've all come to know and love. Check them all out and get ready for what you want to purchase @ the 8PM EST Rush in our store at novaopenstore.com):

Fantasy Flight Games
The NOVA Open is proud to host narrative, side, and grand championship events in a TON of Fantasy Flight Games activities, including KeyForge, Legend of the Five Rings, Star Wars: X-Wing, Star Wars: Imperial Assault, Star Wars: Legion, and Star Wars: Armada. The Star Wars events are a long-running tradition at the NOVA Open, dating back even before our epic 11-foot Star Destroyer; and we're planning some more amazing visual surprises for this 10th Anniversary event. If you're an FFG or Star Wars fan, you'll want to be at the NOVA Open 2019!

Hobby & Fine Arts
The NOVA Open's 10th Anniversary includes our most amazing array of hobby seminars yet, including classes taught by world-famous artists and instructors such as Duncan from Games Workshop in England, Roman from Massive Voodoo in Germany, and CK Studios from ... well, all across the USA and now expanding beyond! The Capital Palette, NOVA Open's famous art competition, is also making a return with some of the coolest categories and likely competitors we've seen to date; it will be "capitalizing" (sorry!) on the development and expansion of skill categorization to make it more accessible to passionate artists of all capability levels.

Corvus Belli
The Infinity events at the NOVA Open are always sold out and full of amazing games and gorgeous miniatures. We're also extremely happy to welcome back Gutier Lusquinos, a CB regular attendee from Spain, the Infinity game designer, and a person who is truly a part of the NOVA Open family.

Privateer Press
Warmachine/Hordes events at the NOVA Open are among the largest on the East Coast, and this year promises to be no different, with a veteran staff of amazing leads and a large suite of events on the docket. Expect an expanded presence and continued top-level support from Privateer Press in person!

Steamforged Games
SFG is coming to NOVA Open in a big way this year, with a strong uptick in the company's physical presence at the con (we're honored, of course!) and numerous events and activities in both Guild Ball and their brand new game GodTear!

Wyrd Miniatures
We're very excited to bring back a full suite of Malifaux events for 2019, supplemented by a tournament dedicated to their new mass battle game - The Other Side! Malifaux has been a staple at the NOVA Open since our second year, so we're very excited to see it continue to shine now that third edition is upon us.

Board Gaming
The NOVA Open's been steadily working to expand into support for board games and the many diverse types of gamers who enjoy them. In particular, this year sees a dramatic uptick in the number of ticketed and tournament-style board gaming events you can participate in, so check them out!

AND SO MUCH MORE! Whether it's the amazing fun times, music, and entertainment of the Foundation Lounge, secret 10th anniversary surprises we can't tell you about (IT'S A SURPRISE!), or something else, we're just incredibly excited about the arrival of registration for our 10th anniversary.

Study the offerings today and plan your cart shopping now. Be ready to go when the clock strikes 8PM (again, US EASTERN TIME). Also, if you want to be among the first 400 to get a swag bag or 100 to get a SuperNOVA or DwarfNOVA, make sure you check out with those items quickly ... they go in literal seconds!

The whole team will be alert and on standby for any customer service or other questions tonight, so we'll be right there with you as excited as ever!

REGISTRATION OPENS TODAY!
We're just HOURS away from the opening of registration for NOVA Open 2019.

  • If you've been to the NOVA Open in the last few years, you'll see that the registration process has not changed significantly. PLEASE make sure to use your existing account to register; adding a new account every year tends to cause confusion for everyone. If you've forgotten your password, it's better to do a reset than to set up a new account. If you have trouble with the reset process, email customerservice@novaopen.com IMMEDIATELY and we'll help you out.

  • If this will be your first NOVA Open, WELCOME! Our registration process is easy, although deciding what events to choose from our many options may be a little more difficult. It's always best to set up your account BEFORE 8PM tonight. Here's what you'll need to do:
  • Go to novaopenstore.com
  • Set up an account

Once that's done, registration can go more quickly:
  • Select your pass - you'll need a Convention Access Pass, a SuperNOVA, a DwarfNOVA or a day pass (or passes) before you can register for any events. Add the pass to your cart.
  • Select and add to your cart any/all events, seminars and merchandise you wish to purchase.
  • Read the terms and conditions.
  • Check out via PayPal.

Once you've registered, you can change your schedule of events using our drop/add feature. You can also use our self transfer feature if you choose to transfer any of your events to another player (can not transfer merchandise). You will get a receipt for your purchase, but will NOT get tickets or passes online or by mail. All registration is electronic. All you'll need to do is show up in August and check in at our registration desk.

Let us know if you have any questions by emailing customerservice@novaopen.com.
Best chance for Swag: Once you have checked out and paid for your pass, go back into your account and start adding games, events, and seminars before they sell out!

If Swag is not more important than registering for events likely to sell out, add your pass and registrations to cart - and then check out.

A team of highly trained monkeys will be on hand during registration TONIGHT to resolve any issues that may arise. Show no fear: reach out to them via Facebook or customerservice@novaopen.com to let them know if they can be of help.
FINAL 100 SUPERNOVAS AVAILABLE TONIGHT
100 SuperNOVAs WILL be available when registration opens tonight. If you're interested in snagging one of these exclusive and awesome packages, remember that all 100 will sell out in seconds. Hover those keys and don't delay! Be ready the moment registration goes live.

Here are some additional tips that might help you get a SuperNOVA:
  • Log in and click on access passes with your cursor hovering over Super NOVA before 8:00 ET.
  • Be prepared to add it to your cart the second it goes live & check out immediately. You can go back and add anything you want to your cart later, but don't try to do it all at once.
  • Also, as you check out, you need to choose your bag (review the pyramid to identify your choices), put in a shirt size and tell what game system & faction you play. Know what you want to say for all those things before 8:00 or you'll miss out.
  • If you put in something that you want to change later, you can email customerservice@novaopen.com a day or two (NOT weeks later) after March 1st and we can change it for you.

Click the updated image below to learn more about why you want to be hovering the keyboard at  8:00pm EST on Friday, March 1, 2019.

Highlights will include:

Warhammer 40,000 Events
  • NOVA Open’s 256-player Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament is the event that launched the Convention. It uses a unique mission and pairing format that naturally tailors itself to different player types. By design, it quickly sorts participants into brackets and tracks that suit their particular way of enjoying the game. Whether you’re all about presenting a gorgeous army, getting in a bunch of relaxed and fun games, or taking home the competitive gold, this format will suit your preferences.

  • The Warhammer 40,000 Narrative is an innovative, in-depth event spread across the NOVA Open. It builds annually on a story that players have contributed to for 8 years, with gaming opportunities that range from all-day, all-night narrative gaming to the ability to drop into any given game during the narrative on an “à la carte” basis. Veterans of the event participate as “Warlords,” adding their own creativity to the daily process and achieving a sense of common purpose and continuity each year. Hundreds of gamers participate in the Narrative, making this immersive event one of the largest of its kind in the world.

JAR'S BEGINNER PAINTING WORKSHOP
BACK FOR 2019
Roman Lappat, of Massive Voodoo, is coming to the NOVA Open 2019 early to teach his popular JAR’s Beginner Painting Class. This will be the first time ever offered in the U.S. In this three-day class, designed primarily for beginners, Roman takes his students on a journey through art history to explain how all aspects of light/shadow, contrasts, color harmony and storytelling can play together in theory and practical exercise. Journeymen and Professionals welcome. Workshop topics include:

  1. Learn to see your world with different eyes
  2. Introduction into basing composition
  3. Learn how to feel harmony in different aspects
  4. Important contrasts for figure painting
  5. Explanation about how to paint a light situation on your figure
  6. Understand color theory and learn how to use it properly
  7. Learn about different materials, their unique properties and learn to paint them
  8. Learn to lose fear of doing something wrong

During the class, students will build and paint a model not only learn to improve painting skills, but also to learn the 'why?' behind everything. Roman's intention will be to explain "the why," so students will be knowledgeable enough to bring the lessons with them each time they paint in the future.

JAR's Beginner Painting Workshop will be taught from
Sunday, August 24, to Tuesday, August 27

Roman will also be teaching a series of hands-on hobby and display seminars at the NOVA Open, including: Learning to Paint Tattoos and Source Light (OSL)
BANSHEE & BASILISK AT NOVA OPEN 2019!
Alfonso “Banshee” Giraldes returns to NOVA Open 2019 with a new slate of classes. He learned a lot about NOVA Open attendees last year and was very excited to create seminar opportunities that fit the culture and needs of those students. This year, anyone attending his classes will have the supreme benefit of learning beside two masters, as David “Basilisk” Mommel will be joining Banshee and teaching together.

The Big Announcement is that these two artists, who are the talents behind the Patreon, Banshee Miniature Art Academy, will be teaching a two-day pre-con class, “ INTRO TO COLOR THEORY & AMBIANCE.” This workshop was designed for wargamers. It is an introduction to implementing these artistic features in wargaming pieces for display. The class will focus on painting, understanding color schemes, and learning to mix colors and welcomes the intermediate to advanced hobbyist. If anyone took Roman's JAR workshop in 2018, the content of this class would connect to that well.

Alfonso is a professional designer, sculptor, miniature painter and art director with more than 15 years of experience. He has worked for Andrea Miniatures, Knightmodels, Scale 75, Forgeworld, Nuts Planet, Pegaso models, and many other companies. He is one of the most prolific instructors in the miniature industry, teaching in more than 30 cities all over the world and with hundreds of students guaranteeing his methods. With Basilisk now working beside him, expect even more opportunities for studying the master techniques of these two artists.

Check out all their classes at NOVA Open’s Seminar Page.

MINIATURE ART STUDIOS TEACHING
AT NOVA OPEN 2019
The NOVA Open Tabletop Wargaming Convention and the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation are extremely fortunate to have built wonderful relationships with the key artists and team talents of several miniature art studios over the years. Do not miss a chance to take classes with these amazing instructors. When you do, remember to thank them for the compassion and generosity they bring to the charitable works of our Foundation.

Wes Cogdal, lead designer for SNS, has been attending and sponsoring NOVA Open since 2011. In 2013, when the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation ( NOCF) began, Wes painted one of the original three armies for that year's online raffles:  House of the Silent King. He has been an active contributor to those raffles every year since. It took a while to convince Wes that seminar instruction was a good fit, but we're glad we did. NOVA Open attendees look forward to learning from him more and more each year. Check out the SNS class offerings at SEMINARS.

Caleb Wissenback, the fearless leader of a talented Band of Talented Artists, cut his instructor chops at NOVA Open 2012. A strong supporter of the Convention, and a contributing member of the NOCF Artist Consortium, Caleb has become one of the best known instructors around. CK Studios exists because of the combined talents of Caleb and his incredible business partner, Kat Jackson. NOVA Open is thrilled to have four members of the CK Studio team teaching this year: Caleb, Vincent Venturella, Sam Lenz and Justin Keefer. Go to - and with the strong support of his business partner, Kat Jackson. Check out the CK Studio class offerings at SEMINARS.

Pay special attention to the Friday evening " MEET CK STUDIOS" seminar, where you'll have a chance to hear their stories and learn about how they brought this year's NOCF Warlord Titan to life!

Caleb Dillon, of White Metal Games, began attending NOVA Open in 2016. It took him a couple years, but Caleb decided to start the WMG venture into teaching seminars at NOVA Open 2018. The classes were all well received and, once again, our attendees were able to enjoy new instructors sharing great tips and tricks. Caleb and his team are back with fresh ideas. Check out the WMG class offerings at SEMINARS. Caleb/WMG joined the NOCF Artist Consortium last year, as well - and Caleb has stepped into a lead role for this year's online Raffles.

ART & HOBBY EVENTS
PREPARE FOR THE 2019 TABLETOP OLYMPICS
The Tabletop Olympics (TTO), which started in 2014, is a free personal achievement and group competition where anyone who attends the NOVA Open can participate. Players accumulate personal "forever achievement points" and can also form groups of 3 to 20 people to compete against other groups. Points can be amassed individually and/or combined with other attendees if individuals band together for group points. In addition to tracking points for teams during NOVA Open 2019, we will also keep track of cumulative points for individuals that accumulate across NOVA Open conventions.

If individuals form groups, they need a Point of Contact (POC/Captain) and a group name. The POC must verify the name is not already taken by registering it with the NOVA Open. POC must also submit/verify list of NOVA Open registered members. We recommend that individuals form groups early; groups can consist of individuals participating in a range of point generating activities..

Groups must email customerservice@novaopen.com to register groups. Registration for TTO is open through August 15; it is reopened onsite at the NOVA Open registration desk.

In addition to earning points by participating in activities, teams can also earn points through team spirit and good sportsmanship. If a team is witnessed by the NOVA Open Staff supporting their fellow team members in a tournament through cheering or wearing team shirts, they will be awarded bonus points depending how strong their team spirit is. If the NOVA Open Staff witnesses a team member going out of their way to help individuals, they will also be awarded bonus points that is up to the discretion of the staff member.

Winning Group and Winning Individual will have their names permanently emblazoned on the NOVA Open Olympic Torch Trophy. As a participant in the Tabletop Olympics, every individual point earned equals an additional chance of winning a prize in the Final Ceremony Raffles; Check-in required (which adds another entry in your name!) Must be present to win.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS
At the NOVA Open, we believe when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. Therefore, we run the annual Lemonade Raffle - where you can win for losing! In order to be eligible, you must have lost at least one of your tournament games. If you are not playing in a tournament, you are not eligible for the Lemonade Raffle. For every tournament round you lose, your event's Lead will enter your name into our raffle pool. This does not apply to non-tournament pickup games. For example, if you lose one (1) round, you will have one (1) entry in the Lemonade Raffle, if you lose five (5) rounds, you will have five (5) entries in the Lemonade Raffle, and so on. Tournament organizers for your specific game system/s will be responsible for entering your name into the raffle pool.

The Lemonade Raffle occurs Friday through Sunday. There are typically four (4) drawings a day, with 20-30 prizes being given away every three (3) hours or so.Throughout the weekend, over 300 Lemonade Raffle items are awarded with prize values escalating as the convention nears its end on Sunday evening. The NOVA Open staff will attempt to delivery prizes to you, but it never hurts to stop by the Lemonade Raffle desk now and then to see if you're a winner!
ARTISTS PREP YOUR BRUSHES!
SEVENTH ANNUAL CAPITAL PALETTE COMPETITION
The NOVA Open convention invites hobbyists and artists to proudly display their work in Capital Palette, a juried, open-forum award, miniature art competition. A 3-judge panel including; Dave Taylor (Head Judge), Roman Lappat, and Matt DiPietro, will award gold, silver, and bronze accomplishment awards for six (6) categories across three (3) divisions. In an open forum competition, there can be multiple gold, silver, or bronze winners in a category (or no winners), and each submitting artists’ work is individually evaluated and receives the level of award the judges feel their work merits, without regard to the awards given to other pieces in the competition.

Three (3) Divisions were added in 2018, submitting artists can use this format to better judge the progress of their work from show to show, without concerns about what other artists may create.Check the NOVA Open schedule for exact time and location of the Capital Palette Medaling Ceremony, which always takes place on Sunday afternoon.

Additionally, the judging panel (see below) will select one model in each category as the Best in Category winner. One of the Best in Category finalists will be chosen as the overall Best in Show winner. Convention attendees will select a Fan Favorite from among all submissions.

NOVA OPEN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
NEWS
NOCF LOUNGE
The Foundation Lounge, located on the rooftop level of the Hyatt Regency hotel, Chesapeake View, throughout the NOVA Open convention, is run by volunteers for the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation. Proceeds support the continued work of the Foundation, as well as other named charities.

The Foundation Lounge has become the go-to place for attendees, where relaxing with old friends and making new ones after long days of gaming at the convention just comes naturally. The Lounge opens at 11:00am every day with last call is at 1:00am. Come on up to visit this year. There's always something going on at this fully stocked bar, where you'll meet industry experts chatting about their businesses, participate in raffles, join board games, enjoy sumptuous snacks and (on occasional) listen to a live band!

The NOVA Open will be underway by mid-afternoon on Wednesday, August 28 - and the Lounge will follow with a 6:00pm opening that day. Make a point to spend some time with us this year! Watch newsletters for a sneak peek at the daily activities being planned.
NOCF WARLORD TITAN 2019!
The NOVA Open Charitable Foundation (NOCF) is thrilled to announce that a New Warlord Titan for 2019 has been donated – anonymously!  Last year’s incredible “Solar Mortis,” painted by John Stiening and pictured here, was responsible for nearly $14,000 in ticket sales.  The chance to repeat – or EXCEED – that fundraising effort is just too good to be true. Special thanks to our secret benefactor.

But WAIT – there’s More!

Caleb Wissenback, a long-time member of the NOCF Artist Consortium, has enthusiastically agreed to rally the considerable talents of his CK Studio artists to bring this year’s Warlord Titan to life. We think it’s also great news for NOVA Open attendees to note that four of these artists will also be teaching classes at 2019.

Under the crazy mad project management skills of Caleb’s business partner, Kat Jackson, the Warlord Titan is off to a grand start.  Please join us in thanking this incredible team for their support and sign on to follow the progress:

VOLUNTEER/INTERNSHIPS OPPORTUNITIES
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ~ INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE
NOVA Open extends its sincere appreciation to all those who volunteer in support of NOVA Open and the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation. These two organizations are looking for year-round volunteers with any interest in supporting their missions.

INTERNSHIPS ARE IMPORTANT POSITIONS FOR COLLEGE AND WORK APPLICATIONS!

If you enjoy the NOVA Open and being a part of the charitable work of NOCF - and you have the time and energy to put into year-round volunteering - please send us an email telling us a little about yourself and your experience with NOVA Open: customerservice@novaopen.com

This is also a great opportunity for high school and college students and graduates. NOVA Open has a long history of providing internships to enhance college and job applications. Internships in the convention and event planning arena are hard to come by, and those with non-profits are very difficult to attain. If you have a son or daughter, family member or friend, who may be in need of an internship, send them our way using the customer service email above.

Everything you need to know about volunteering at the NOVA Open can be found on our website by clicking the button below.
