Dr. Washington launched his academic career in 1995 as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering at Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he served as a professor, associate dean, and interim dean for the university's engineering school. Before being appointed as President of George Mason University, he served as dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.
An accomplished researcher and educator, Dr. Washington specializes in dynamic systems, with an emphasis in the modeling and control of smart material structures and systems. He is the author of more than 160 technical publications in journals, edited volumes, and conference proceedings. Dr. Washington has received a number of awards for his work in engineering and technology.
Dr. Washington enthusiastically began his tenure at George Mason University implementing anti-racism initiatives to actively address institutional racism within the university. He also established enhanced education pathways for students on all levels to provide opportunities for all students and a qualified workforce for the business community.
