COUNCIL MEMBER RODRIGUEZ SPEAKS OUT ON SCOTUS IMMIGRATION DECISION
New York, NY, - Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez issued this statement following the split Supreme Court decision upholding the Federal Court of Appeals ruling filing an injunction against President Obama's Deferred Action program for undocumented immigrants.
"Today we received the awful news that the split Supreme Court was unable to uphold President Obama's deferred action program for undocumented immigrants. This puts 5 million aspiring Americans, including over two hundred thousand New Yorkers, at risk of deportation. The abject failure of our congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, as well as their unprecedented refusal to vote on President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, now has the potential to severely tear at our social fabric, causing great damage to our country.
"Given this tragic turn of events, it is imperative that President Obama direct the Department of Justice to end the mass deportations and raids being perpetrated on immigrant communities. Thankfully, New York City, led by Mayor de Blasio, will remain a sanctuary city and will stand by the immigrant communities that make our city the best in the world"
