COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE CHAIR RODRIGUEZ ON 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT BILL SET TO BE INTRODUCED IN STATE SENATE

To be Introduced by Senator Jeff Klein (IDC-Bronx) at Long Last

New York, NY--Responding to reports that NYS Senator Jeff Klein would be introducing a bill related to lowering NYC Speed Limits to 25 MPH, NYC Council Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez issues this statement:

"I am pleased to see movement from Senator Klein on prioritizing a safer limit for New York City. I will first review the language of the bill but I am hopeful that by the end of session, we will see a law passed that makes our streets safer for all who use them, with a 25mph across the city."

Background

A day prior, June 10th 2014, Counicl Member Rodriguez joined Families for Safer Streets, an organization comprised of family members whose loved ones were killed in traffic crashes, and Transportation Alternatives to call for the introduction of a bill in the NYS Senate matching Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's already passed 25 MPH bill.

The City Council issued a near unanimous home rule request today on the Assembly bill, also sponsored by Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell.
