COUNCIL MEMBER YDANIS RODRIGUEZ STATEMENT ON LOEWS 175TH STREET THEATRE LANDMARK VOTE

New York, NY -- On Wednesday, April 5th, 2017, the NYC Council voted unanimously, led by Council Member Rodriguez, to support the landmark designation for the Loews 175th Street Theatre.

This theatre, one of three "Wonder Theatres" designed by renowned theatre architect Thomas Lamb, features beautiful architecture, borrowing from multiple styles and religions to bring together a beautiful facade.

Upon its passage, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez issued this statement:

"The Loews 175th Street Theatre, widely known as the United Palace, will forever have a place in our community in Washington Heights. This building is a gem that has served to bring together our diverse neighborhoods for generations and I am pleased to say that it will continue to do so. This is big news for our residents who have been strong advocates for the building, as well as the preservation community that has long sought to see this building recognized with landmark status. It is my sincere hope that the building will forever be utilized as a cultural center for kids and adults of all ages. The United Palace for the Arts organization has remained true to these goals, reopening the theatre up to the public for movies and great performances. I especially want to thank the Eikerenkoetter family for their excellent stewardship over the past fifty years. Their efforts are a testament to the care and concern this building deserves and I look forward to their continued work in keeping this building in the amazing shape it is in today."
