NYC City Council Hearing on Res. 1092 Calls U.S. President to Lift Cuban Embargo, End Travel Ban

Today, Thursday, October 31st, the New York City Council held a hearing for Res. 1092, sponsored by Council Member Barron, Council Member Rodriguez and Council Member Van Bramer, calling upon the President to lift the Cuban embargo and bring an end the Cuban travel ban. Good morning and welcome to this hearing of the City Council's Committee on Cultural Affairs. I am Ydanis Rodriguez and I am proud to co-sponsor Resolution 1092 alongside Council Member Barron and Council Member Van Bramer. Resolution 1092 is a straightforward, common sense legislation calling on the U.S. President to do the right thing: lift the Embargo and end the Travel Ban against the people of Cuba.
The ban has gone through many stages and transformations throughout the years. Just this week, the Trump Administration banned all flights to Cuban cities, with the exception of La Havana, in his latest move to roll back the easing of relations of the Obama era.
The embargo, set on 1961, shortly after the revolutionary takeover of Fidel Castro, was implemented as a measure to penalize the Cuban government. As we know, the embargo has only served to punish the Cuban people who have suffered incredible hardship for decades. It has also hindered our ability to interact with the Cuban nation on all aspects of cultural, educational, financial, and trade relations.
It is 2019 and many of the policies set by long past administrations have changed. The Cuban embargo is a relic of the Cold War years, which has no benefit to U.S. security or economic interests. It is time we get rid of a policy that only serves to harm us all.
Today, we are calling on the U.S. President to write a new page in the history of American foreign policy by restoring our relations with Cuba. We owe it to the Cuban and the American people."

Consejo Municipal Sostiene Audiencia Acerca Res. 1092 Llama Presidente Ponga Fin al Embargo y Restricciones de Viajes a Cuba

Hoy, jueves 31 de octubre, el Consejo de la Ciudad de Nueva York celebró una audiencia para la Res. 1092, patrocinada por la Concejal Barron, el Concejal Rodríguez y el Concejal Van Bramer, pidiendo que el Presidente ponga fin al embargo contra Cuba y a las restricciones de viaje. "Buenos días y bienvenidos a esta audiencia del Comité de Asuntos Culturales del Consejo de la Ciudad. Soy Ydanis Rodríguez y estoy orgulloso de copatrocinar la Resolución 1092 junto con la Concejal Barron y el Concejal Van Bramer. La Resolución 1092 es una legislación simple y necesaria que llama al Presidente de los Estados Unidos a hacer lo correcto: levantar el embargo contra Cuba y poner fin a las restricciones de viaje.
Las restricciones de viaje a Cuba han pasado por varias etapas y cambios a lo largo de los años. Esta semana, la Administración de Trump prohibió todos los vuelos a ciudades cubanas, con la excepción de La Habana, en su última hazaña en deshacer el acercamiento creado durante la era de Obama.
El embargo, establecido en el 1961, poco después de la toma revolucionaria de Fidel Castro, se implementó como una medida para penalizar al gobierno de Cuba. Como ya sabemos, el embargo solo ha servido para castigar al pueblo cubano quien ha sufrido dificultades increíbles durante décadas. El embargo también ha obstaculizado la interacción en todos los aspectos de las relaciones culturales, educativas, financieras y comerciales entre ambas naciones.
Estamos en el 2019 y muchas de las políticas establecidas por administraciones pasadas han cambiado. El embargo contra Cuba es una reliquia de los años de la Guerra Fría que no beneficia a la seguridad ni a los intereses económicos de los Estados Unidos. Es hora de deshacernos de una política que solo perjudica a todos".
