Volunteers From Arlington Businesses and Local Nonprofits Connect for Day of Service
Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day included virtual kickoff with County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti and volunteer projects following social distancing guidelines
ARLINGTON, Va. - Today, local volunteers from Chamber member businesses and organizations lent a helping hand to area nonprofits as part of the 22nd Annual Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day. Produced each year by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce's Community Action Committee, this rewarding half-day of service provides an opportunity for nonprofits to develop relationships with Arlington businesses, and for businesses to give back to the community.

This was the second Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day that has been adapted to meet the the needs of COVID-19 pandemic. The event started with a virtual kickoff featuring County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti who said, "This opportunity to volunteer is a great way for us to move into the recovery stage of this year." De Ferranti also remarked that Arlington's COVID-19 numbers have been improving, and expressed optimism that "we're starting to move fully into recovery." 

Following the kickoff, participants volunteered for the nonprofit projects that they selected. The projects were a mix of remote and in-person activities completed in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia and CDC guidelines to ensure that volunteers were practicing social distancing.

"The Chamber is proud to provide this connection between Arlington's business community and our local nonprofits," said Chamber President & CEO Kate Bates. "This past year has highlighted the importance of coming together to serve our community, and today's event creates the opportunity for volunteers to build relationships with nonprofits for continued service."
 
This year, the Chamber had 120 volunteers that lent a helping hand for 14 projects arranged by local nonprofits. The participating nonprofits had a variety of assignments for volunteers. Some of these projects included decorating flower pots to brighten senior citizens' homes at AHC Inc., cleaning local parks and streams with EcoAction Arlington and Phoenix Bikes, and bagging food items at AFAC.
