2020-2021 School Calendar
Board Approved
The
2020-2021 District Calendar
was approved at the February Board meeting. The first day of school for students next year is Tuesday, August 25, 2020, and the last day of school is Wednesday, May 26, 2021. Inclement weather dates were selected to reclaim potential lost instructional hours prior to state testing and alleviate having make-up dates after Memorial Day weekend. PLC days were also placed near the end of quarter dates to allow for data team collaboration as well as to provide a more consistent calendar option.

Congratulations, Mrs. Jackson
Hallsville Primary School names new principal
We are pleased to announce that Chelsea Jackson has been selected as the new principal of the Hallsville Primary School for the 2020-2021 school year. Mrs. Jackson will work with Mrs. Jimerson, who is retiring at the end of this school year, to ensure a smooth transition in leadership and will officially start as principal on July 1.
Mrs. Jackson has been the Elementary Assistant Principal since 2018, has served as the summer school administrator, and made significant improvements to our induction program for new teachers.
Prior to her administrator role in Hallsville, she was an elementary teacher at Columbia Public Schools and held various leadership roles such as PBIS chair and was a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.
“Every day I walk into the primary school, and I am overwhelmed by the amount of love and support that is shown to every student and staff member. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that has been established and creating new memories as the building welcomes the addition of second grade students next year with the completion of the district’s bond construction,” states Mrs. Jackson.
John Downs, Superintendent of Hallsville Schools, states, “We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Jackson as our next leader of Hallsville Primary School. The relationships she has already formed with primary students, families, and staff will only strengthen as she transitions into this new role.”

February Meeting
RECOGNITIONS
Adam Ronnfeldt
, HHS social studies teacher, was recognized for his work on the implementation of the high school’s new missing work program ICU. When presented with opportunities to help, Adam is always willing to do what is asked and what is needed.
Codi Campo
s, Intermediate school counselor, is in her second year within the district and has melded seamlessly into the district and school. Codi is an advocate for students and shoulders much of the burden that comes from her role within the school.
APPROVAL OF DISTRICT PROGRAMS
The board approved the Special/Supplemental, Gifted and Talented, and Career Education programs. Each evaluation outlines goals, sources of data, evaluation results, evidence of change over two years, program strengths and concerns. Program concerns for additional staffing needed for the Special/Supplemental and Career Education were specifically discussed.
HHS FOCUS GROUP
In January, selected high school students participated in a focus group with members from the Boone County Community Service Department. The goal of the focus group was to gain feedback from youth to inform a future Request for Proposal for programs related to youth issues. Questions asked included gathering ideas about how to improve youth experiences in Boone County and what youth want decision-makers to know.
PRIMARY TRANSITION
Preparations are being made for the second-grade relocation to the primary building. Routines and schedules are being evaluated to best meet the needs of our new population in 2020-21. Second-grade teachers have also had the opportunity to spend a day at the primary to view their schedules and meet with staff.
SCHOOL SAFETY
Ty Sides, the Safety Coordinator for the district, discussed the dangers of vaping and the increased use in middle and high school students. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that 12.4% of eighth-graders, 10.8% of tenth-graders, and 13.1% of twelfth-graders have vaped marijuana. Marijuana wax and concentrates can be hard to detect and carry very little odor so it can be hard to tell if a student is vaping marijuana, especially if they are using a high-quality vape pen. The administration and staff are committed to continuing to provide vaping education to students.
E-RATE PROJECT
I
n 2019, the District created a proposal for Category 2 E-rate funding to complete smaller-scale network infrastructure improvements at Hallsville High School and Hallsville Primary School. All aspects of this project were let for competitive bid in accordance with federal E-rate requirements and state statute. CDW won the bid for equipment. Steel-Nett won the bid for the installation of cabling. Details on each aspect of the project are provided online. Pending USAC approval, E-rate funding is anticipated at 70% of the total project, leaving the district’s financial responsibility at $5,324.01, which would be included in the FY21 budget. This project would be completed during the 2020-2021 school year.

2nd Annual Community Concert Fundraiser
Indian PRIDE Bands
Join the 6th-12th grade bands for a night of music and desserts this Saturday, February 29 in the HHS West Gym! This is the 2nd annual community concert sponsored by the Indian Pride Band Boosters.
Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the concert begins at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing a new baritone saxophone and quad drums, as well as additional percussion equipment. More information on purchasing tickets can be found

February Update
The February 2020 report presented to the board outlined updates on the construction progress for gymnasium and second-grade classroom wing. The main roofing system and exterior walls have all been completed. Main overhead mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are continuing to be installed. Restrooms are progressing with rough-in activities, and interior finishes in the second-grade wing will begin soon.

Board action was requested on the following change order: (1) updated gymnasium floor graphics, (2) change from oil-based to water-based gym floor sealant, and (3) addition of audio-visual infrastructure in second-grade classrooms. Change orders to the gymnasium floor will allow for summer maintenance to only take 24-48 hours to complete, as opposed to the 9 days it takes now. It will also allow the floor and markings to keep the original color.
Additionally, SM Wilson has requested Board approval of pay application #7, also included in the update. Klingner has reviewed and approved the pay application, and will certify with signature in advance of the Board meeting.

State Wrestling
Carpenter, Huddleston, & Pemberton Medal
The HHS wrestling team concluded their season this past weekend at the MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships. When all was said and done, the boys walked away with two 3rd place finishes and a 6th place finish.

Gavynn Carpenter finished third in the state at Class 120 with a 48-3 record, including 30 pins. Gavynn defeated multiple returning State medalists over the course of the tournament. Gavynn fell in the quarter-finals to a four time state medalist and eventual State finalist but rebounded by dominating a returning State bronze medalist in the consolation semi-finals, then beating a returning 4th place medalist for third place. Gavynn's only three losses this season came to State finalists and champions. In addition he pinned multiple State champions, including giving the Class 2 120 State champ his only loss of the season.

Andrew Huddleston capped off a phenomenal season with a third place finish at the State Tournament at Class 1 152 pounds and a 46-3 record. Andrew lost a tightly contested match in the semi-finals to three time State finalist and returning state champion, Ross Arch, of Palmyra. Andrew then dominated two very good wrestlers on the backside of the bracket, including a returning bronze medalist. Andrew finishes as a four time State Qualifier, a one time State bronze medalist, and a one time State Champion. Andrew also ended with a career record of 176-33, going 98-6 over the past two seasons.

Lucas Pemberton finished the season 36-4 and sixth in State at Class 1 160 pounds. Lucas ended the regular season a perfect 31-0. His three losses at State came by a combined total of four points to some very good wrestlers. In order to secure his medal, Lucas dominated a previously unbeaten opponent from Valle Catholic. Lucas finished his career as a three time State Qualifier with 133 career wins.

Area IV Proficiency Selection
Congratulations to Karsyn West, Sydney Simmerman, and Tanner Johnson on their Area IV Proficiency Selection
first place finishes! Area IV Proficiency Selection is the result of a student's work-based experience and record books. The application includes 6 short essay questions, a financial portion, and pictures of their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) with captions. Each student’s application will move on to state competition and the final results will be announced at the State FFA Convention in April.

Karsyn West- 1st Place Beef Production Entrepreneurship
Karsyn currently operates a small Simmental and Sim-Angus cattle business within her family’s farm. Through her experience and ownership of her business, West has set future goals and acquired new skills and interests that continue to drive her. She has become very accustomed to assisting with the vaccinations, worming, and general care of the herd. This has led Karsyn to have an interest in science and veterinary fields as well as a broadened view of what the agricultural field entails.

Sydney Simmerman- 1st Place Poultry Production Entrepreneurship
Sydney currently operates a poultry business focusing on raising chickens and selling their eggs to friends and family members. Her family has owned chickens for most of her life, and they have been in the business for a few years. This learning experience has been beneficial for Sydney as it has assisted her with learning entrepreneurship and caring for these animals.

Tanner Johnson- 1st Place Ag Sales Placement
Tanner is a dedicated worker at Powder Horn Guns and Archery. The countless hours that he has put into the job has allowed him to gain the experience and skills essential to the production and marketing of agricultural products. Tanner is an archery technician and has become knowledgeable in filling out federal firearm paperwork. This experience will allow Tanner to take advantage of career opportunities offered in the sales field.

On sale until March 13
Yearbooks are now on sale! Elementary books are $15 and high school books are $40. Order form links are below, which also include information on how to order online. Orders must be turned in by Friday, March 13.
The elementary book (PreK-8) will be delivered in May before school is out for the summer. The high school book will be available during registration the first week of August 2020. Seniors or senior parents will be able to pick up books during registration or in the high school office. The later delivery date on the high school book is due to coverage of spring sports and events, such as Prom and Graduation.
