Roscommon Elementary School

Dear Parents,

I know that this winter's weather has been particularly challenging for you as you deal with both the elements and having to periodically make alternative plans for your children when school has been cancelled. It is a constant challenge to balance student safety concerns with the loss of learning time when students miss a day of school.

This year, we have had 11 snow days. The State of Michigan allows schools to cancel school for six days due to weather conditions. In addition, there is a process where the State will grant up to three additional days. This leaves the district in the position of having to make up two additional days.

To make up one of days, we will be having school on  Friday, April 19th . It will be a half day with dismissal for the high school at 11:10 a.m., the middle school at 11:20 a.m and the elementary school at 11:30.

The second make-up day will tentatively be added to the end of the year in June. Wednesday, June 12th will be a full day of school and Thursday, June 13th will be a half (and last) day of school.

Of course, this end of school date is contingent upon having no further snow days. Since it is clear that winter is far from over, this plan may change. There is also pending legislation in Lansing that may change whether the day in June is needed. We will have to wait and see whether further changes are needed.

For now, please mark your calendars on April 19th as a school day. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at 989-275-6600 or .
