YORK COUNTY — Over several days in mid-May, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to begin daytime ramp closures from southbound Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) to southbound Route 134 (Hampton Highway), as part of an ongoing bridge rehabilitation project in York County.
The Route 17 southbound closure, in place from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, is currently estimated to be in place May 12, 14 and 15, weather and schedule permitting. During the closures, a signed detour will be in place directing motorists to access Route 134 via Victory Boulevard (Route 171). Additionally, the previously implemented long-term closure for northbound traffic from Route 134 to southbound Route 17 remains in place. The northbound lane from Route 134 to Route 17 north will continue to remain open to traffic during this work.
These additional short-term southbound closures will allow crews to streamline deck pour operations for the new bridge deck. Once the new deck is complete, crews will transition to the next phase of construction, shifting the southbound traffic onto the newly finished northbound bridge to begin repairs on the southbound bridge. During work on the southbound bridge, the bridge will remain closed to northbound traffic from Route 134 to Route 17 south.
All work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change. This work is part of a $5.1 million VDOT project awarded to Kokosing Construction Company to rehabilitate the bridge on Route 134 over Route 17. Estimated for completion as early as late 2026, the bridge work includes the replacement of the bridge deck and approach slabs, as well as minor repairs to the bridge’s superstructure and substructure.
