Topic of conversation: While it would be nice to have script for every conversation with our kids that involves sexuality and relationships, the reality is we have to be informed enough to adapt to questions or unexpected reactions. Kids can be overwhelmed by the onslaught of a cultural tidal wave of messaging, and building skills to navigate the relentless exposure and pressures requires the support of anchoring adults.
As parents or guardians, we can be a reliable source of information for adolescents while also maintaining appropriate boundaries. Adults who model social courage and the ability to find their way through awkward situations help instill in kids the belief and expectation they can do the same.
Practicing social courage helps young people develop resilience and the willingness to endure the inevitable social consequences of standing alone and speaking their minds.
