The nation's largest prospective study of health care workers exposed to COVID-19 has been launched by Rutgers and  includes a series of clinical trials that will explore new drug treatments, antibody testing, and long-term health tracking in the hope of providing insight into how to treat the disease and prevent its spread.

Close to 550 health care providers and close to 300 non-health care workers from Rutgers, University Hospital in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick have already volunteered for the study, some with direct patient exposure and others with no direct patient contact. The study is being coordinated by  Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Initial results suggest a gender disparity in risk: women have been infected at a rate of 13 times their male counterparts. 

These studies are supported by the National Cancer Institute, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, corporate partners such Marken/UPS and dfYoung, as well as individual philanthropic support.

The Sponsored Research Agreements (SRA) team, formerly known as Corporate Contracts, will assume responsibility for research agreements related to sponsored programs historically under the purview of  Research and Sponsored Programs, regardless of sponsor The team will foster mutually beneficial and strategic alliances between Rutgers and sponsors through professional and responsive review, negotiation, and management of agreements related to sponsored programs, basic research and clinical research on behalf of Rutgers researchers. They will also serve as the official signing office for research agreements and provide training to Rutgers stakeholders.
Agreements under SRA's purview include, but are not limited to: nondisclosure, material transfer, clinical, data use, research, research services, master agreements, MOAs, MOUs and other types of agreements related to sponsored programs, as well as all associated amendments and modifications.
The Research and Sponsored Programs unit will continue to manage Notices of Awards and associated modifications issued by NSF, NIH, NASA and Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) sub-award agreements, and associated modifications. Interactive Computational Workbench for Single Cell Genomics Analysis green-circuit-board.jpg  

The Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC)  staff built an interactive computational workbench for single cell genomics applications to help researchers in dealing with large scale data analysis and visualization. Single cell genomics techniques are important to understand the biology at cell level and widely used in several research and clinical applications, including the research to understand the interaction of virus-immune system.  The computational workbench developed at OARC helps campus researchers analyze large scale single cell genomics data without worrying about the complexity of computational algorithm or advanced cyber infrastructure. The interactive application allows a researcher to move the data from the device to the data center, run a data intensive  computational pipeline, and visualize the final results.  Researchers can access the application through their web browser.  For additional information, contact OARC's Senior Scientist, Bala Desinghu

Friday, May 1:  Introduction to the Amarel (Webex) 
This fast-paced three-hour short course offers a brief introduction to using a Linux cluster. The goal is to help everyone make those first few steps toward productively using a Linux cluster for research. All members of the Rutgers community have free access to the Amarel Cluster.
This workshop is intended to provide an advanced introduction to RNA-sequencing , an overview of issues to consider, and hands-on practice using current research tools available on OARC-maintained clusters. Topic covered will include: experimental design (e.g. read length, depth, replicates); basic statistics for RNA-seq; quality control (QC) and raw read QC; FastQC reports and interpretation; quality-based trimming with Trimmomatic; read mapping and read counts; aligners; HTSeq counting and post-mapping QC.

This workshop is intended to extend the advanced introduction to RNA-sequencing from Part I with the following topics: data processing and filtering; normalization; quantification and differential expression; expression quantification; relevant statistical models; multiple test correction; analysis (sample) QC; clustering; principal component analysis (PCA); heatmaps; volcano plots; functional analysis; Gene Ontology (GO) term annotation and enrichment; Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA); an overview of pathway analysis; an overview of coexpression and network analysis; feature name, term, and identifier mapping and conversion; data preparation; and differential expression analysis.

The Rutgers University Molecular Imaging Center (RUMIC), located on the Livingston Campus, provides imaging resources for the non-invasive evaluation of structural features and biological processes in living systems, disease models, ex vivo organs and preserved specimens. Physical objects (e.g. biomaterials, viscous fluids, ice crystals, assembled electronics, polymers, medical devices, etc.) can also be evaluated. Comprehensive imaging modalities for the basic and preclinical sciences include MRI, PET/CT, microCT, nanoCT, Optical/X-ray Imaging, High-Resolution Ultrasound & Echocardiography Technologies. Image reconstruction, animation, 3D display and quantitative image analysis can be conducted at RUMIC workstations or via remote access to advanced VivoQuantTM software. The Center provides animal holding facilities for serial imaging, anesthesia, surgery, animal treatment and veterinary care. In addition to consultation and experimental services, the Center offers periodic training and conducts research to improve existing imaging technologies. Although its mission is to empower Rutgers investigators by promoting independent use of the imaging systems, expert assistance is available. A Proposal Development Repository is now up and running, complete with re
sources and grant tool kits separated by sponsor. The repository is intended to assist Rutgers  faculty and research development professionals who are developing funding proposals. 
Additionally, a listing of COVID-19 related funding opportunities is now available and frequently updated online . Any opportunities not listed can be sent to the  Research Development team for inclusion . The team also  set up a saved Pivot COVID-19 search, to which researchers can set up weekly email alerts for COVID related opportunities. 
Finally, for those not familiar with using Pivot, a database of funding opportunities from federal, non-federal, foundation, and other private sponsors for all disciplines and project types, a new Pivot Resources page was created. Stay tuned for information about Pivot trainings soon .

The core facility team at ORED has recently launched a grant program to provide  core facilities with support funding up to $100K. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until  December 31  and funding decisions will made on a rolling basis within 90 days of submission. All core facilities across all chancellor units at Rutgers are eligible. The  funding is expected to begin by July 1, 2020.

The Busch Biomedical Grant program is designed to enhance biomedical research at the University and to strengthen the competitive position of faculty members who seek external research funds. The Busch Biomedical Grant Program is funded by the interest income from the Charles and Johanna Busch bequest to reflect the wishes of Charles Busch. The Busch Biomedical Grant program will support research projects up to a total of $40,000 for up to two years ($20,000 per year). Applicants must have a Full-Time Faculty appointment. Applications are due by May 11

To help stimulate scientific thought and encourage efforts and advancements in the spirit of Sir Isaac Newton, the Basic Research Office in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Newton Award for Transformative Ideas during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This award will be presented to a single investigator or team of up to two investigators that develops a "transformative idea" to resolve challenges, advance frontiers, and set new paradigms in areas of immense potential benefit to DoD and the nation at large. Proposals should aim to produce novel conceptual frameworks or theory-based approaches that present disruptive ways of thinking about fundamental scientific problems that have evaded resolution, propose new, paradigm-shifting scientific directions, and/or address fundamental and important questions that are argued to be undervalued by the scientific community. Applications are due by May 15.

The American Association For Cancer Research-Bayer Stimulating Therapeutic Advances through Research Training (START) Grants represent an exciting and novel initiative to encourage and support such collaboration. These grants, which will provide support to postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, combines research experiences in both an academic and industry setting, following a research timeline that will be of greatest benefit to the proposed work. Each fellowship provides a three-year grant of $225,000 to support the salary and benefits of the fellow while working on a mentored cancer research project. Proposals focused on clinical research are highly encouraged. Applicants must plan to spend one year on site at a Bayer facility. Applications
are due by May 26.

To encourage a commitment to breast cancer research, Breast Cancer Alliance invites clinical doctors and research scientists whose primary focus is breast cancer and who are in the early stages of their careers, to apply for funding for the Young Investigator Grant. This grant is intended to help advance the careers of young researchers who do not yet have their own major grant support but who design and conduct their own independent research projects. This is a two-year grant for a total of $125,000, with half the grant award being paid out each year. Full applications for the Young Investigator Grant are due on or before July 24, 2020. Research Partnership proposals are limited to two applicants for the whole university. Pre-proposals must be submitted through the Rutgers  Limited Submission process . Pre-proposals are due by May 29.
