The 2nd Regional Academic Drug Discovery Symposium, which will be held at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, is fast approaching. The intended goal is to bring together leaders from universities and biopharma companies from NJ, NY, and PA to discuss how to develop tomorrow's drugs today. Rutgers' Interim Senior Vice President for Research and Economic Development David Kimball and Executive Director for Strategic Alliances Vincent Smeraglia will participate in the event, focusing on advancing university drug discovery research. Revised Common Rule Announcement
For research involving human subjects, the federal Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) has scheduled regulatory changes, referred to as the Revised Common Rule, to be implemented on January 21, 2019. Although these regulations were delayed twice in the past, the regulations are expected to be ready for implementation in January. Learn more
Proposed Change to Endorsement Activity and RAPSS Process - Feedback Requested
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Corporate Contracts teams are proposing a change to the endorsement activity and Research Administration and Proposal Submission System (RAPSS) process effective January 1, 2019. The proposed change will eliminate the endorsement requirement for certain actions at the time of submission, reduce RAPSS administrative burden for units and PIs, and simplify reporting out of RAPSS. All RAPSS system users are welcome to provide their feedback on this proposed change.

Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute Open House - October 25
Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2) Research Expo and Networking event will be held on October 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Busch Campus Student Center - Center Hall. The event will highlight the capabilities and expertise at RDI2, as well as provide updates on its exciting new initiatives. A poster showcase will feature the RDI2's research collaborations.

The purpose of the
Brain Research Foundation 2019 Fay/Frank Seed Grant Program is to provide start-up monies for new research projects in the field of neuroscience that will likely lead to extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other outside funding sources. PI must be a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor working in the field of neuroscience. Pre-proposals must be submitted through Rutgers'

Rutgers Research Council Subvention Grants
The Rutgers Research Council is continuing its pilot program to offer subvention grants in the fall semester. Subventions provide partial subsidies to presses for the publication of scholarly books authored by the faculty, given that in some cases, university and other highly regarded presses ask authors to cover a portion of the cost of publishing a scholarly book in order to make it more affordable. This program is designed to assist with those costs. Application deadline: December 5, 2018.

NSF BIO Releases Two Solicitations for Rules of Life Big Ideas
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released two new solicitations for one of its 10 Big Ideas, Understanding the Rules of Life (URoL):
Epigenetics; and
Building a Synthetic Cell - An Ideas Lab Activity. URoL goals are to better understand the "rules" of how life functions, to develop research tools and infrastructure to advance this field, to train the next generation of researchers, and to foster convergent research across NSF.
