YOUR RESEDA NEIGHBORHOOD

COUNCIL'S BEGINNING

In 1999, after many years of the voice of the community not being heard by the politicians that they elected, Los Angeles City Voters voted to create a body that would get the ear of the Councilmembers that represented them.

The Department of Neighborhood Empowerment was created and in 2001, neighbors began to form Neighborhood Councils. BONC was created to facilitate the recognition of these Neighborhood Councils.

The volunteers that gathered together in Reseda Made their appliction to be certified in early 2002. BONC certified the Reseda Neighborhood Council in October of 2002, Having made plans during the wait, the Reseda Neighborhood Council held its first election 3 weeks later.

Over the years, your Reseda Neighborhood Council has been a leader, and done many things to improve Reseda and over recent years using the Community Impact Statements to influence some City activities.

One recent CIS questioned why the Mayor appointed a representative for the West Valley who in no way represented the people he would represent. The nomination was withdrawn.

Recent CIS documents were instrumental in the City owned Reseda Parking Lots, being singled out to have the spaces replaced if the lots were converted to low income housing.

Be connected, attend your Reseda Neighborhood Council meetings, join a Committee and be sure to vote on June 18th.

HEAT RELIEF 4 LA CAMPAIGN 2023

SENIORS WANTED

The Older Americans Act mandates that the Council on Aging be the principal advocacy body for seniors and disabled individuals in the City of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Department of Aging (LADOA) asked us to reach out to the City’s Neighborhood Councils to request assistance in identifying civically minded seniors sixty years of age and older to join their Advisory Council on Aging.  Once identified, staff will follow up with these older adults to answer any questions and have them complete an application for membership.  The role of the Advisory Council on Aging is to provide older adults who reside in the City the opportunity to lend their insights into our community planning process, identify emerging needs and make recommendations on how to best serve seniors in the City of Los Angeles.

Please take a moment to identify civically minded seniors that would be interested in serving as a volunteer on the LADOA's Advisory Council on Aging. They can contact Zipora Gipson, Social Worker with the LADOA, at (213) 202-5635 or via email at zipora.gipson@lacity.org to obtain more information and an application. Please see attached letter as well.

RESEDA NC YOUNG ADULT & BUSINESS BOARD MEMBER POSTIONS OPEN!

There’s three types of people, those who make things happen, those who let things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Don’t you want to be the first type?

Well, YOU CAN BE!

The RNC is your way to help make a difference in your community. From telling the city how you want development in your community to be done, to organizing cleanups, to working on problems currently facing your community like chronic homelessness and urban blight, to organizing events for the community’s youth and seniors, and initiating events like the annual Artwalk. The RNC is working to change things for the better, and we need your help to do it!

We currently have two Board Member positions open to be filled by active, dedicated community members who want Reseda to improve. This positions are for Young Adult Board Member and Business Board Member Vacancy. Any Stakeholder interested in filling a vacancy on the Board shall submit a written application to the Secretary (jamiey@resedacouncil.org) at any time before a vote is taken, and the application must specify the stakeholder category the applicant is running for. Business Board Member stakeholder qualifications can be found in the bylaws.

https://resedacouncil.org/web1/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/RNC-Bylaws-Approved-11232020-1.pdf?x48066

We also have committees looking for volunteers to help such as the Planning and Land Use Management Committee that helps chart the course for Reseda’s development and evaluates and considers proposed developments in the community, or the Unhoused Neighbor Advocacy Committee which is advising the city on possible solutions to the current unhoused crisis.

If you would like to apply for one of the Board Member Seats or join one of our committees, please contact the RNC secretary at secretary@resedacouncil.org

RAMS MOVE TO VALLEY

I am very excited that the process to welcome the Los Angeles Rams year-round practice facility/headquarters to the West Valley has officially begun. Last week they filed their initial plans with the Planning Department. Right now we are helping bring our City family to the table to ensure their review gets rolling so the Rams can call Warner Center home as soon as possible.

This new project will be located on the old Anthem parking lot off Canoga and Erwin. It will be very similar to the site they have been operating for the past few years at Cal Lutheran with several large football fields with a network of temporary modular structures. And to be clear, this will be their year-round practice facility. The beautiful So-Fi Stadium will continue to be their home for games- this Warner Center site will be where they practice, train, and have offices. Unlike a stadium that is open to the public, this practice facility will have little to no traffic, noise or other negative impacts on the surrounding community.

Over the coming months, as this project moves forward, the Rams and my staff will continue to meet with community groups to share their proposal and address any issues or questions that may arise. I’m looking forward to welcoming such a storied NFL franchise to the West Valley.

INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Deborah Lopez and I am a field representative for Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, working alongside my colleagues Valerie Berkley, Alberto Vargas and Jack Trent Dorfman. I wanted to share some details about our District Office Internship Program, which provides volunteers an opportunity to gain experience in a government office.

Interns assist the District Office in several ways: 1) helping with office work, including answering phones and engaging with constituents, processing mail, conducting legislative research, preparing certificates of recognition for residents, etc., 2) accompanying field staff on visits throughout the district, 3) providing support at district-sponsored events, such as tabling at concerts-in-the-park and farmers markets, and 4) preparing and presenting a “capstone project” highlighting an issue that the intern would like to see go through the California legislative process.

Our office also provides interns with other professional experiences. Past programming has included workshops on resume building, professional etiquette, and career development.

Interns dedicate approximately eight hours per week at the District Office with occasional weekend availability for community events. We are happy to sign off on any school credit or volunteer hours. Most of our current interns go to school full-time and have jobs as well. This opportunity is open to those ages 16 and older.

Please share this opportunity with your networks of colleagues and friends. We are currently recruiting for both our Spring and Summer terms, and we encourage individuals of diverse backgrounds to apply.

We ask that prospective interns complete our application here and send any questions to assemblymember.gabriel@assembly.ca.gov or to my email directly at Deborah.Lopez@asm.ca.gov.

Best regards,

Deborah Lopez
