Advocate for Family Medicine

The FMEC encourages all of its members and the other students, residents and faculty we work with to register to vote and to use their authority as healthcare providers to examine and promote health policy issues they care about.

Be an Advocate This Election Season

From the Edelman Trust and Health in the US Report, primary care providers are well-respected, with 56% of respondents saying their opinions on health policies are influenced by their PCP, compared to only 35% by scientists and health experts. Help your patients and communities become knowledgeable about health policy issues and register to vote! Visit Vote.gov (https://vote.gov/) to register to vote, and order a badge to promote voter registration to your patients from Vot-ER (https://vot-er.org/).

Ask Nurses and Doctors (AND)

From now till the 2024 elections, the bipartisan group Ask Nurses and Doctors (AND) is working to help pass health reform legislation at the state and national level, and to elect competitive candidates and/or incumbents who prioritize health care reform. They will operate in swing states and competitive Congressional elections. In the 2018, 2020, and 2022 cycles, they worked with 15-30 health care professionals in each of approximately 10 Congressional districts. In addition, they organized local health care professionals in swing states like Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Visit Ask Nurses and Doctors.

Go to Vote.gov (https://vote.gov/) to register to vote. Help your patients, family, and community members access vote.gov to become registered too. If you’ve recently moved to a new state for medical school or residency training, make sure you’ve registered in your new state. Learn about absentee voting and vote-by-mail. Visit Vote.org for all state voter registration deadlines. The deadline has passed in many states in the FMEC region, but some allow registration up to and including Election Day, which is November 5. Deadlines: October 7 (Ohio), October 6 (Rhode Island), October 12 (Delaware), October 14 (Virginia), October 15 (DC, Maryland, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Maine which also allows registration in person on Election Day), October 18 (Connecticut), October 21 (Pennsylvania), October 26 (Massachusetts, New York), Election Day (New Hampshire, Vermont).

New FMEC Projects - Join Us

New Project will Address Medical-Dental Collaboration

With the support of the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, the FMEC is launching a new education and quality improvement (QI) project to affect change in how primary care approaches the oral health of patients, with a focus on access to appropriate and comprehensive care for veterans. The medical-dental integration curriculum Smiles for Life has low penetration in the FMEC region, with only about 15% of the approximately 3,800 residents participating in 2023. Veterans have high rates of periodontitis, tooth decay, bone loss, and use of sweetened beverages and nicotine, and often need access to more comprehensive care including dental care but also mental and behavioral healthcare, trauma services, and substance use counseling and assessment. If you are an oral health advocate and would like to participate, either on the project’s leadership group or in the QI project to improve your residency program, please contact Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net.

Learning Network on Personal Health Inventory in Development

The FMEC Integrative Health Learning and Teaching Network is developing a learning collaborative on using the HOPE Note (Healing Oriented Practices and Environments) and integrating Personal Health Inventory (PHI) questionnaires into clinic visits. CME and Performance Improvement credits will be offered. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rebecca Bouck at rebecca.bouck@fmec.net

Help Introduce Students to Family Medicine

At the 2024 Annual Meeting, incoming President Dr. Pam Vnenchak announced that the FMEC’s student scholarship program – which has brought nearly 8,000 medical students to FMEC meetings over the last 20 years – would be named the Nik Zervanos Student Scholarship Program, in honor of FMEC founder, Dr. Nikitas Zervanos. Dr. Zervanos, founder and long-time director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, has been instrumental in introducing students to family medicine. In 1992, Dr. Zervanos singlehandedly found a funding source to pay for the expense of bringing dozens of students to the FMEC Annual Meeting. That meeting, known as “The Happening in Lancaster,” started FMEC on the path it follows today. Thousands of medical students have chosen the specialty due to their exposure at the FMEC meetings.

Please help continue the great work started by Dr. Zervanos and contribute to the Nik Zervanos, MD, Student Scholarship program.

Help the FMEC bring 300+ students to the Annual Meeting every year!
