summer '19

As summer is winding down, I expect most of you are in full swing with a new season of school routines and opportunities to grow, learn and evolve. We continue to do the same at 8-koi Headquarters amid the arrival of Hurricane Dorian in Florida. To all our friends and neighbors on the peninsula, please be safe out there!
On August 8th, 8-koi celebrated another business birthday. THANK YOU to All for your continued support! Over the past 11 years, we have embraced the opportunity to evolve and grow in our community, in our reach, and in our work. Most importantly, we continue to grow in our knowledge, experience, and expertise as we stay focused on our clients' needs and delivering to them exceptional services in the areas of training, administrative and technical services, healthcare, construction and design engineering. If you haven't done so lately, take a look at our
EDWOSB capabilities.
From our humble beginnings we continue to mature and give thanks to all who make 8-koi possible, and I want to make sure that we recognize those who lend 8-koi their
human touch.
Recently I traveled to Houston and had the chance to meet 8-koi employee Cheryl Sills, RN, CCM. Cheryl is our proudly featured employee below. She is a nurse and case manager at the Center for the Intrepid. More than that, she is a patient advocate and supporter for amputees and burn victims – some may call her an Angel on Earth. Cheryl is making a difference in the everyday lives of our servicemen and women and civilians in their time of need.
In so many ways we work to improve lives through the work we do. Our purpose and our plan is to continue
to provide full-spectrum contracting solutions with a human touch. As 8-koi strengthens its team we are becoming better prepared to be an industry influencer and be in the forefront of our clients' minds.
I welcome your feedback at any time or if you have questions, please send an email to
8-koiHeadquarters@8-koi.com, or call our office directly at 321.802.6768.
Enjoy the great news in this issue of 8-koi
kurrents, and feel free to pass it along.

MEET THE TEAM :: Cheryl Sills RN, CCM
Case Manager, Center for the Intrepid
|
Cheryl Sills RN, CCM, is the RN case manager at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, since 2016.
She assists patients in getting to the CFI for rehab and helps coordinate with patients’ multidisciplinary team on individualized plans of care. As a patient advocate she schedules patients’ appointments, monitors and assesses patients’ needs and arranges for durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hospital beds or oxygen. Supporting patients includes making referrals to other providers for continued care and connecting with the VA and other resources to advocate for patient needs and seeking benefits such as VA auto grants from available sources.
When a patient arrives at CFI, they come through the trauma center. Most patients arrive at the CFI for amputee care. Active duty, military retirees, civilians and foreign military and some on medical temporary duty (TDY) come from all over the country in need of treatment.
CFI is a four-story building housing: clinical research, administration, an indoor pool with a flow-rider, an indoor running track, a two-story climbing wall, a firearm training simulator, a prosthetic fabrication lab and an activities of daily living (ADL) apartment. All prosthetics and braces are manufactured directly on site. CFI offers high-tech equipment for recovering patients. The military performance lab includes a gait lab to evaluate motion and a computer assisted rehabilitation environment that allows the healthcare team members to measure and analyze patients’ balance, movement and coordination to improve motor skills. Patients are offered and receive physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, prosthetics, behavioral medicine and community reintegration support.
Center for the Intrepid was built in 2007 with donations from over 600,000 Americans.
“This rehabilitative center is dedicated to our severely wounded military heroes whose selfless sacrifices for our nation entitle them to the best rehabilitative care,” Sills said. “I’m proud of the work I do and the purpose I serve.”
About the picture: "Gary Sinese comes yearly and provides a barbecue, concert and meets with soldiers individually. He is awesome!"

The newly constructed arena will host the international competition on May 18-22, 2020, at the Astronauts Memorial Foundation in the Center for Space Education at KSC. Competing teams are challenged to design and build a robotic excavator that can excavate the most simulated lunar dirt within a specified time. Teams submit a systems engineering paper and educational outreach project. The competition is designed to promote and engage students in the science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, disciplines critical to NASA’s missions.
