On March 17-18, RESPECT of Florida hosted a two-day ISSA (The Association for Cleaning & Facilities) training in Apopka to bring together Employment Centers from across the state and our staff. Mark Warner from the ISSA Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) lead the training focused on Accredited Auditing Professional (AAP) certification and Custodial Supervisor development. Drawing on his extensive experience in the cleaning industry, Mark delivered a practical, hands-on training that connected industry standards with real-world application.
Over the two days, participants covered a wide range of topics essential to custodial and management practices. A key focus was on industry standards and the public perception of cleaning, which is often undervalued. The training reinforced the critical role cleaning professionals play in protecting public health, maintaining safety, and preserving facilities. Asset preservation was another major theme. Participants learned how proper cleaning not only improves the appearance but also extends the life of buildings, equipment, and materials ultimately reducing long-term costs. The training also introduced modern cleaning procedures, new technology, and updated equipment to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Supervisor development was a central part of the course. Discussions emphasized the importance of selecting the right leaders based on not only experience, but also personality, communication skills, and leadership ability. Chemical usage was also covered in depth, supported by real-world examples that highlighted safe and effective practices. The training concluded with a detailed session on conducting cleaning audits, including hands-on instruction. Participants completed a comprehensive 300-question exam for the Custodial Supervisor Training, along with a 15-question assessment for the Accredited Auditing Professional certification.
Overall, this training was both informative and impactful. It strengthened the knowledge and skills of RESPECT of Florida staff and our Employment Centers, while supporting the long-term success and quality of our programs statewide.
