A Word From Missionaries John and Rachel Stout

We have been serving as missionaries since 2010 starting in Haiti and Zimbabwe as International Managing Chefs with MercyChefs and then in 2013 becoming Missionary Associates with the Assemblies of God US Missions and Career Appointed US Missionaries in 2014. For 16 years, we have reached around the globe with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the power of a Shared Meal, Christian Love and Hospitality, and the Word of God.

It is because of the continuous prayers and generous support of partners like you that we are able to reach into the hard, darkened, war-torn places of the world with the light and the love of Jesus Christ. Thank you for sending us!

Lives Are Being Changed at Runners Refuge

Dear Friends,

Every day at Runner’s Refuge Discipleship Academy begins before sunrise.

The lights come on.

Boots hit the floor.

Coffee brews.

Bibles open.

Before the work crews head out, before the classes begin, before breakfast is served, men and women gather together to worship Jesus and hear His Word.

This isn’t simply another program. It is discipleship. It is restoration.

It is lives being rebuilt one day at a time through the transforming power of Jesus Christ.

Over the last four years, God has allowed us to disciple more than 230 men and women through our residential academy. Many arrived carrying addiction, homelessness, incarceration, broken relationships, trauma, and hopelessness.

Today many of those same people are serving in churches, working full-time, restoring families, and becoming leaders in the Kingdom of God.

That is what Jesus still does.

Serve Others- A Ministry Built On The Gospel

For more than 16 years, God has opened doors for Rachel and I to serve wherever people are hurting.

Together with faithful partners like you, we have had the privilege of serving on the front lines of disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.

Your partnership has helped us respond to:

  • The 2010 Haiti Earthquake
  • The 2015 Nepal Earthquake
  • Hurricane Harvey (2017)
  • The West, Texas Explosion (2014)
  • The Wimberley Floods (2015)
  • The July 4th Kerrville Floods (2025)
  • The Bastrop Fires (2011)
  • Three Mountain Fires (2015)
  • The War in Ukraine (2017 and 2021)
  • Zimbabwe Economic Collapse (2010)
  • 2013 Philippine Typhoon Haiyan
  • Weekly Street ministry throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, and Louisiana (2010-present)
  • More than 2 million meals served to homeless men and women across the southern United States including DFW, New Orleans, Texarkana, Las Cruces/Alamogordo/El Paso. (2010-Present)

Every one of these opportunities began with someone saying,

“I’ll help send you.”

We have always "Shared The Gospel Of Jesus Christ Through The Power Of A Shared Meal" that is the mission. That is our sole purpose, to Share JESUS! Rachel and I believe in the mission. It was the Mission of Jesus. He rarely spoke to the spiritual need without touching the felt need first.

The Mission Today

Today our greatest assignment is taking place on our 59-acre Runner’s Refuge Discipleship Academy campus near New Boston, Texas.

Here we are building men and women of godly character through:

• Daily Bible Study

• Prayer

• Biblical Counseling

• Work Therapy

• Leadership Development

• Ministry Training

• College Education through Nelson University

Our goal has never been simply to help someone survive.

Our goal is to raise up disciples who will impact their families, churches, and communities for generations.

Every Day Matters

A typical day on campus includes:

✔ Morning Chapel

✔ Scripture Memory

✔ Academic Classes

✔ Vocational Training

✔ Community Service

✔ Physical Fitness

✔ Evening Worship

✔ Accountability and Mentorship

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens through thousands of faithful moments as people learn to follow Christ one step at a time.

"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26–

A Life Changed

Lyle came to the ranch from our Alamogordo New Mexico Urban Impact Center. His story with Runner's Refuge starts about 3 years ago when he was high and looking to find a way to purchase Methamphetamine so he and a friend broke into our kitchen trailer and stole our generator.

When he heard that the generator they stole was the people that feed the homeless he tried to help find it but it was already long gone and he really couldn't remember who he sold it to.

From that day, Lyle has built a relationship with Pastors Rich and Hope at our Alamogordo Urban Impact Center until the day he decided to take his relationship with Jesus a step further and pursue discipleship at the Discipleship Academy.

Lyle has grown immensely in his relationship with Jesus over the past 3 months. He is leaning into the Word of God, growing in the Spirit, and is soaking in the spiritual disciplines, and the Gospel like a sponge. The transformation in his life is remarkable.

Only God can take someone like Lyle and turn their life around so drastically.

It is only trough partners like you that Lyle was able to come to the Academy and learn what it means to Live Free Indeed! We don't charge Cadets to come to the Academy. We say He Paid the Cost. We rely on generous gifts from partners like you to help people like Lyle learn to Live Free! Who will you send?

Will You Stand With Us?

Over the last few sections, you’ve read about what God has done.

You’ve read about sixteen years of faithful service as missionaries. You’ve seen lives transformed through the Runner’s Refuge Discipleship Academy. You’ve seen disaster relief efforts that have reached communities devastated by tragedy. You’ve read the story of one life forever changed by the power of Jesus Christ.

Those stories are not just memories.

They are happening today.

Every meal served…

Every chapel service…

Every Bible study…

Every counseling session…

Every bed provided…

Every gallon of fuel…

Every outreach into the streets…

Every man and woman being discipled…

…is possible because faithful people like you choose to partner with us.

Today, I want to ask you to become one of those partners.

Our Vision: 300 • 30 • 20

For the past 15 years we have relied primarily on mine and Rachel's other streams of residual income and a handful of wealthy sponsors to fund Runner's Refuge so we have not focused on fundraising from churches and individuals as much. That has worked for the season we were in, but as we have grown and are continuing to grow we have realized that model will not serve us much longer. Below you will find a visual to help explain the funding vision for this season of growth, rather than depending on a handful of large donors, we believe God is calling us to build a broad family of faithful ministry partners.

Our goal is simple:

  • 300 Individual or Family Monthly Partners
  • 30 Church Partners
  • 20 Business Partners

If each partner simply does their part, together we can ensure that the Gospel continues to be proclaimed and lives continue to be transformed for years to come.

The Kingdom has always been built by God’s people working together.

No one church can do it alone.

No one family can do it alone.

But together, we can accomplish far more than any of us ever could individually.

The Reality We Face

There is something many people don’t realize.

We have never adjusted our ministry budget since 2013.

For thirteen years we have stretched every dollar as far as possible.

We have delayed purchases.

We have repaired instead of replaced. All of the airconditioners on the ranch are over 40 years old, we keep them in service.

We have driven vehicles far beyond what most people would consider reasonable all of our vehicles except one are over 15 years old, we keep them in service.

We have done everything possible to be faithful stewards of every dollar entrusted to us.

But we have reached a point where stewardship alone cannot overcome reality.

Fuel costs have increased.

Food prices have increased.

Insurance has increased.

Utilities have increased.

Building materials have increased.

Vehicle maintenance has increased.

Every expense required to operate this ministry has increased dramatically. Yet we have continued trying to accomplish a 2026 ministry with a 2013 budget.

Simply put…

That is no longer sustainable.

We Need Your Partnership

If Runner’s Refuge has ever encouraged you…

If you believe in discipling men and women into mature followers of Jesus Christ…

If you believe the homeless deserve hope…

If you believe lives can still be changed by the Gospel…

Would you prayerfully consider making one of the largest gifts you have ever given to missions?

We need to raise at least $15,000 this week, to close out the month of July in the black and be able to pay our staff and all our our bills. If you could, would you prayerfully consider giving $1000, $5000, even $10000 as a one time gift.

Then, would you consider becoming a monthly ministry partner?

While one-time gifts are a tremendous blessing, recurring monthly support is what allows us to plan, budget, and continue serving with confidence. It provides stability for daily operations and enables us to focus less on wondering how the bills will be paid and more on reaching people with the hope of Christ.

Whether your monthly partnership is $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, or more, every recurring gift strengthens this ministry and helps sustain the work God has entrusted to us.

Churches can adopt Runner’s Refuge as a monthly missions partner.

Businesses can invest in restoring lives and strengthening communities.

Individuals and families can become part of every life God changes through this ministry.

You Become Part of Every Story

One day in Heaven, I believe we’ll meet people whose names we never knew.

People whose addictions were broken.

Families that were restored.

Children who received a godly father again.

Men and women who answered God’s call into ministry.

Lives rescued from despair because someone chose to give.

When you partner with Runner’s Refuge, you are doing far more than supporting an organization.

You are helping write the next testimony.

You become part of every meal served, every Bible opened, every prayer offered, every baptism celebrated, every graduate commissioned, and every soul reached with the Gospel.

Rachel and I cannot do this alone.

Our staff cannot do this alone.

Our cadets cannot do this alone.

But together, we can continue restoring lives, equipping disciples, and sending laborers into God’s harvest.

Would you prayerfully ask the Lord what He would have you do today?

Then respond with joyful obedience.

Thank you for believing in this ministry.

Thank you for believing in people.

Thank you for helping us proclaim the hope of Jesus Christ.

May God richly bless you for your partnership in His Kingdom.

Together, we will continue to see lives restored, disciples equipped, and the Gospel carried to those who need it most.
