NEWS FROM MOOR HALL STUDIO

This last week I ventured down to London not only to see my very dear friend Bonnie Dobson, folk singer extraordinaire, but also to meet up with school friends from 1964, and also to go to an exhibition at the Royal Academy by Michael Craig-Martin. I had heard that one press review was not particulary kind about this show, but I was not disappointed. I wanted to see his work in the flesh, as this term my art students have been introduced to his ideas and thinking and to the development of his work. He was Senior lecturer at Goldsmith College of Art from 1973 to1988 and taught Damien Hurst amongst others and there is no doubt, that strong evidence of conceptualism appears in his earlier work.

Do look up this 'controversial works' and see what you think and feel about it. If art work is supposed to provoke emotions it certainly does do that!!!!

My students have been looking at his more recent work. Craig Martin has produced a very large book full of his very simple line drawings and the students started the course over the summer hoildays by having to fill a small sketchbook with their own personal drawings from selected subject matter. These drawings have been the basis for all of the work on this project.

We started very simply by using just one of their objects and painting it in flat colour. Students quickly came to realise the importance of using professional quality gouache paint in getting a really flat surface.

Students then drew and painted images coming out of the format as in the image right and above.

Mutiple images were then used, first all fitting inside the format and then spilling out of the format.

Designs became more complex and included lettering (right and above). Others included, as in the one below, solid forms with linear drawings.

We still have alot of work to cover on this project, when the scale of the work will increase further, so do watch out for future newsletters.

I will be advertising for more art students, both on my website and in newsletters. Do get in touch if you would like to visit the studio and meet the students and see if what we do is your cup of tea........in fact you will even be offered a cup of tea/coffee.
