NGIA Members and Sponsors: Nebraska has resubmitted its SNAP food restriction waiver to USDA, as are other states whose waiver approvals were impacted by the federal lawsuit.

The new waiver will be open for public comment for 30 days, and NGIA will submit comments on behalf of Nebraska retailers. We will emphasize the need for clear guidance, adequate implementation time, and consideration of the significant investments retailers have already made in POS systems, product coding, training, and customer communication.

The state is currently targeting December 1 for implementation, meaning SNAP restrictions would be turned back on Dec. 1. NGIA has significant concerns with implementing another major SNAP change at the beginning of the holiday shopping season—one of the busiest and most operationally demanding times of the year. Retailers need sufficient time to update and test systems, train employees, and communicate changes to customers.
