These awards are named after long-time volunteer, Fred Heslop, who dedicated over 20 years of his life to hockey. We're thrilled to recognize these incredible individuals who have made positive impacts at their local rinks. | |
2025 Fred Heslop Award Winners
Tracey Thompson - Capital Region Female Minor Hockey Association
Although she has no children in hockey, Tracey Thompson recognized a gap in support for the girls’ game and decided to get involved. Since 2019, she has been coaching with the Capital Region Female MHA leading at the U7 level.
|
Terry Wood - Sicamous and District Minor Hockey Association
The President of Sicamous and District MHA, Terry Wood, has made a commitment to make sure that the passion of hockey continues to grow in his community. The lessons the kids learn about social nuances and how to work with others is what's important to him.
| |
Janet Hamel - Terrace Minor Hockey Association
Janet Hamel's kid's love for the game has encouraged her to dedicate over 17 years to her hockey community, building relationships that feel like family. Even though her son has aged out of minor hockey, she still supports where she can.
| |
Todd Cunningham - North Shore Winter Club and North Shore Female Ice Hockey Association
Todd Cunningham returned to coaching at North Shore Winter Club and North Shore Female Ice Hockey Association to spend more time with his daughters and hasn't looked back since.

The 2025 TELUS Cup, Canada's U18 Men's National Club Championship, took place between April 21 - 27, 2025 at the Chilliwack Coliseum. The tournament featured five U18 AAA regional champions from all over Canada coming together to compete for the national championship.
The BCEHL's U18 Fraser Valley Thunderbirds hosted the event and welcomed the regional champions, including pacific representatives, the U18 Okanagan Rockets. After clinching the BCEHL's U18 AAA Championship, the Rockets advanced to the Pacific Regional Championship against the Calgary North West Flames, eventually securing their spot at the TELUS Cup. The Thunderbirds and the Rockets played five games each in the preliminary round, and did not advance to the knockout stage.
Congratulations to Okanagan Rockets' goaltender, Finn McKiernan, who was named the tournament's top netminder!
Stick taps to Okanagan Rockets' defender, Lukas Sisson, who won the Esso Most Dedicated Athlete Award and received a $1,000 scholarship.

As May was Mental Health Month, we would like to spotlight Buddy Check for Jesse. This organization was founded in memory of Jesse Short-Gershman by his father, Dr. Stu Gershman, and aims to foster meaningful conversations about mental health among youth hockey players. The program can help provide coaches with resources to facilitate supportive team environments, reducing mental health stigma in the hockey community.
Over the past six years, numerous associations and coaches have participated in organizing Buddy Check events, which typically include Coaches' Chats designed to help athletes discuss mental health in a safe space. Players also receive green Buddy Check swag as a symbol of solidarity, making the initiative both impactful and a way to promote well-being in the sport.
For more information or to start planning your event, please contact events@buddycheckforjesse.com and check out their website and extensive social media footprint: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube
