Superintendent's Message
Dear FJUHSD community,
Happy New Year and welcome back to the second semester. I want to thank everyone for a successful beginning to the school year during these uncertain times. Thank you as well for your continued patience, understanding, and flexibility as we navigate these opening days and weeks of the second semester. This month our focused theme is “Kindness Matters" and I am challenging myself and everyone else to look for ways to share random acts of kindness throughout the entire FJUHSD community.
The recent spike in COVID-19 cases, both locally and nationally, caused by the Omicron variant has added another challenge for all schools. As we begin the second semester, I would like to emphasize that FJUHSD is committed to the safety and well being of all our students. As we move through the next days and weeks we would like to reassure all of you that we continue to closely monitor COVID-19 and the Omicron variant daily, and will continue to communicate often as new information becomes available. Please see the links in this newsletter for our most recent updates.
As we prepare to navigate this next phase of the pandemic, we encourage everyone to continue to share “simple acts of kindness” through showing care and respect for each other, staying healthy by following safety protocols, getting tested and vaccinated, and wherever possible, offering support to friends, families, and colleagues. It’s been a true pleasure to be a part of this community for the past seven months and I am confident we will continue to maintain our focus on providing a supportive and robust educational experience for all of our students and families.
Steve McLaughlin, Ed.D.

Donations
Our community, stakeholders, and other generous partners have been tremendous support for FJUHSD. We have received numerous donations supporting our school sites and students from the beginning of the fiscal year, July 2021, through December 2021. These donations allowed for different types of support, including student scholarships, club support, program support, and beautification of our schools. We appreciate their acts of kindness because Kindness Matters as these donations support our staff (over 1,400 employees) and students (over 13,400).

FLOCK Scholarship Distribution
|
A total of 140 FLOCK Scholarships for 2nd quarter were distributed to FJUHSD students before the Winter Break with a total of $11,650 in gift cards for students to make their necessary purchases. Below is a graph of what percent of scholarships went towards clothing/shoes, school supplies, food, hygiene items, and other needs. FLOCK also donated 20 wrapped Christmas gifts for our District Community Liaison to distribute during FLOCK scholarship distribution week for those students who have younger siblings at home. Students were very grateful to receive their scholarships before the break and thankful for the gifts they received for their younger siblings.

The Fullerton Joint Union High School District is fortunate to be served by many outstanding classified, certificated, supervisory, confidential, management and administrative staff members. Each month, Human Resources has the honor of showcasing a staff member or members who contribute to the support, development and success of our students and who help to make this District exceptional.
This month, Human Resources is proud to recognize Bus Driver, Margarita Johnson.
While many of us are still tucked cozily in our beds each morning, Margarita Johnson is faithfully completing the daily safety check of her bus, ensuring that the students she will soon pickup will be safely transported to school for another day of learning. At each house at which she stops, Margarita wishes a warm “Good morning!” to each parent and greets each student by his or her name and a welcoming smile. It is immediately apparent that Ms. Johnson knows her students well and has developed relationships that extend well beyond her duties as a bus driver. She knows her students’ interests and their challenges, and she takes the time to speak with them each day and to foster the kind of relationships that allows her to know when one of her students is having a rough day and is in need of a few words of encouragement and support. Margarita’s enthusiasm and love for her job and the students she transports to school each and every day are plainly evident, and those teachers, instructional aides, students, parents and administrators fortunate enough to work with her each day cannot help but be inspired by her commitment and dedication.
Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for your kindness, exceptional service to our staff, students, parents, community and District! You truly represent the excellence among us.
