Rockford Area Historical Society
Do you know where the expression "mad as a hatter" comes from?  We do.  In the "olden days", craftsmen who made beaver hats would use mercury and lead to clean oils from the beaver pelts.  Over time and constant exposure to these chemicals, the 'hatters' accumulated heavy metal poisoning, which often changed their behavior.  And the expression "mad as a hatter" was born.  You can come see an authentic 1875 beaver pelt hat at the Stork House Museum in Rockford, one that may have given rise to this expression.

Membership in the Rockford Area Historical Society helps guarantee the preservation and continuity of our history, and of the identity of where we came from.  It will help us maintain the Stork House, and explore and find additional history to record.
