CYBERSECURITY

Network Security in the Hospitality Industry

In recent years, the hospitality industry has had the second-largest number of cybersecurity breaches after the retail sector. The reason is hotels and resorts offer cybercriminals several entry points to attack, including software systems, third parties, or even employees with minimal cybersecurity knowledge. Large amounts of personal data and financial transactions are available, including that of wealthy individuals, government officials and celebrities.

How Can Hotels and Resorts Protect Themselves?
  • Train and Re-Train Your Staff: It's important to train staff on cybersecurity practices just like you would on customer service.
  • Strengthen Your Infrastructure (Specifically POS Machines): Patch and update systems as frequently as possible to remain protected.
  • Regulate Vendors: Most cyberattacks on the hospitality industry are carried out through third party vendors. Regularly assess all vendors to verify they meet a compliance standard.
  • Create a Plan: It's a matter of when, not if an attack will happen. Have an incident response plan in place if a data breach does occur.

Some steps to maintain POS systems security:
  • Avoid using default or easy-to-guess passwords.
  • Use two-factor authentication, no matter how long or complex passwords are.
  • Ensure antivirus or endpoint protection is installed and up-to-date.
  • Separate the POS network from other networks.
  • Separate Wi-Fi networks by making guest Wi-Fi and business networks separate.
  • Hotels should deploy Wireless Intrusion Prevention Systems (WIPS) to detect and prevent hacking attempts against the Wi-Fi network.
