Debt ceiling breach would sink construction starts by as much as 30%

Via Construction Dive - A prolonged debt ceiling breach that languishes into July would cause a 14% drop in 2023 construction starts and a further 9% tumble in 2024, according to a forecast from Dodge Construction Network. From the market’s peak in 2022, that would translate into a 30% loss in new building activity.

Will AI take your construction job? Only if you want it to

Via Construction Dive - Henning Roedel thinks questions about AI taking away jobs in construction miss the point. “We don’t think about how to reduce our staff size, because we have enough backlog and work ahead of us that we need more people,” said Roedel, robotics lead for the innovation team at Redwood City, California-based DPR Construction. “You need to flip the displacement question around because we currently don’t have enough people in our industry to meet the construction needs of society as it is.” Learn more.

Census Bureau Unveils Unique, Interactive Building Permit Tool

The U.S. Census Bureau has created an interactive map of national, state, and county building permit data for the first time.

The recently released tool allows quick access and insight into the dynamics of permits issued for new residential construction. Why does it matter? Because markets for new housing can vary — hotter in some states, colder in others — and understanding trends in new residential permits is crucial to those following the market.

The tool also provides new data for every one of the 3,143 U.S. counties and shows how many single family, multi-family, and total housing units were authorized in each.

The new tool allows users to follow changes in data over the past few years and to drill down to more detailed data and geographic areas.
