2021 RI C-AIM SURF program underway!
The 2021 RI C-AIM Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program has begun! Students from across our eight institutions are engaging in a wide array of marine research and broader impact-based projects.

Mentors are required to attend our upcoming training workshop, "Strategies for Effective and Inclusive Mentorship," hosted by URI's Metcalf Institute on June 4. This virtual workshop will be led by Dr. Valerie Sloan, director of the GEO REU Network at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and Dr. Rebecca Batchelor, an atmospheric scientist currently leading the Significant Opportunities for Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS) program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado. This year, RI C-AIM investigators will also highlight their recent research through our Brown Bag Seminar Series (links under Events Schedule below) every Thursday at 12 pm. These webinars are open to anyone in the RI C-AIM community. Good luck to our 2021 SURFs!

RI C-AIM Career Development Program: Summer Intensive
July 23 & 24

This July, URI's Metcalf Institute will hold a two-day online professional development workshop via Zoom. The program will explore a variety of science communication tools, methods, and competencies, including fundamentals of science communication, data visualization, and more. Participation in the intensive will count towards the RI C-AIM Career Development Program certificate.

Mollicutes & Microbiomes
RI C-AIM investigator and URI doctoral candidate Zachary Pimentel has had ongoing research on microbiome dynamics of Crassostrea virginica, or the Eastern Oyster, published in mSphere, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Zachary has led the research alongside researchers from both URI and Roger Williams University. Congrats!

Student Impact: Diana Fontaine & Catrina Nowakowski
RI C-AIM investigator and URI doctoral student Diana Fontaine recently explained phytoplankton's role in the marine environment as a guest of the SolveIt! For Kids podcast. Listen! Meanwhile, the RISD Nature Lab highlighted 2021 Vis-a-Thon participant Catrina Nowakowski's project expressing food web data via sculpture in their monthly newsletter. Congrats to both!
