Leadership Corner šŸ’” Top Rankings, Real Challenges, and the Road Ahead for Rhode Island's Health System

Rhode Island Ranks 4th in Nation for Health System Performance

For the third year in a row, Rhode Island has earned a top-tier national ranking in the Commonwealth Fund’s 2025 Scorecard on State Health System Performance, placing 4th in the nation.

The Scorecard highlights Rhode Island’s strengths in access, affordability, prevention, and treatment—while also noting ongoing challenges such as workforce shortages and health disparities. Many of these priorities align directly with CTC-RI’s work to strengthen primary care, advance team-based care, and close equity gaps.

Spotlight: Scorecard Author Dr. Radley Shares Insight on Rhode Island's Ranking

David Radley, PhD, MPH, Senior Scientist at the Commonwealth Fund and lead author of the 2025 Scorecard on State Health System Performance, shared insights on Rhode Island’s 4th-place ranking and what it means for patients and providers.

Dr. Radley highlighted the state’s strengths in access, outcomes, and equity, while noting challenges around costs, coverage, and workforce shortages. His perspective underscores the importance of sustaining progress and preparing for future health system pressures.

"Rhode Island isn’t alone in the challenges facing its health system. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for strengthening the system, there are things states can do."––Dr. David Radley
