Rhode Island seeks up to 400 megawatts of clean, affordable energy
|
At the direction of Governor Gina M. Raimondo, a competitive request for proposals (RFP) was issued this month to procure up to 400 MW of affordable renewable energy resources for Rhode Island consumers. National Grid developed the RFP in coordination with the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) and Division of Public Utilities & Carriers (DPUC).
"I have set an ambitious goal of making Rhode Island's energy system ten times cleaner in an affordable and reliable manner, and we're well on our way," said Governor Raimondo. "Our commitment to combating climate change is as strong as ever. Along with the recently announced 400 MW Deepwater Wind offshore wind project, this administration is working hard to secure new and diverse supplies of cost-effective clean energy for Rhode Island homes and businesses, reduce our carbon footprint, and spur other benefits for our economy."

Rhode Island gives 1,200 trees to homeowners during Energy-Saving Trees Program
|
Trees play an important role in cooling streets and homes, filtering air, and reducing storm water pollution.
This month, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation to give away 1,200 trees as part of the State’s Energy-Saving Trees program. The program helps homeowners conserve energy and reduce utility costs while beautifying their neighborhood.
The Office of Energy Resources provided funding for the Energy-Savings Tree Program from Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative auction proceeds.
The program is now in its seventh season.

Solarize Jamestown crosses finish line at Tier 3
|
As a result of increased participation and interest in solar,
Solarize Jamestown
reached Tier 3, allowing for steeper discounts for residents installing solar. The program for Jamestown closed September 21.
Solarize Rhode Island is a community-based outreach campaign that provides residents and small businesses the opportunity to become more energy independent and have more control over their electricity bills. The unique tiered pricing structure unlocks increased savings as more solar contracts in the community are signed.
Solarize Narragansett, which kicked off June 19, will run until November 2. Narragansett residents and business owners may find more information about the program and upcoming events at

There will be a
solar open house in Narragansett on October 14 from 11 a.m. to 1p.m.

Rhode Island consumes the least energy per capita
|
Rhode Island consumes the least energy on a per capita basis, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, ranking the lowest among all 50 states.
According to the
report, Rhode Island surpassed New York in 2016:
"Rhode Island is one of the most densely populated states, and most of the state’s gross domestic product comes from relatively less energy-intensive commercial sector activities such as real estate, health care, and finance. Rhode Island consumes less energy per capita than the U.S. average in every sector—especially in the industrial sector, where it was 77% lower than the national average in 2016."

Company Profile: Shaidzon Beer Company
|
Shaidzon Beer Company, located in West Kingston, Rhode Island, was recently voted the second "favorite solar brewery” in New England and 15th in the country in the
Brews from the Sun competition.
Shaidzon is located at the Fairground Business Development Center, owned by Beth and Andy Curtis. The building, which houses two other business tenants, features a 189 kilowatt solar array which went into operation last year. The system utilized a Renewable Energy Fund grant and currently offsets about one-third to half the building’s electrical usage in the winter, and nearly 100 percent in the summer. The carbon emissions prevented from entering the atmosphere are equivalent to saving 11,573 gallons of gasoline per year.

Meet Lisa Bryer: Jamestown Town Planner
|
Lisa Bryer has been the Jamestown Town Planner for 21 years. She lives with her husband, James, who works as the town’s fire chief. They have a son, Ian, and daughter, Rachel.
Lisa has always considered herself to be environmentally conscious and wanted to do her part to help the world by reducing her reliance on fossil fuels. Two years ago, she made the decision to equip her home with 4.57-kilowatt solar array which supplies about 40 percent of her electricity during the year. She utilized a
federal tax credit, which is available to all customers who install solar.
