Welcome Message from the Chair
Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore,
Chair, Rhode Island Semiquincentennial (RI250) Commission
Fellow Rhode Islanders,
As we prepare to commemorate the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding—I’m proud to reflect on Rhode Island’s role in American history. Though we are the smallest state, our legacy of independence and courage is undeniable. We were the first colony to renounce Great Britain, two months before the Declaration of Independence. The 1772 burning of the HMS Gaspee was a pivotal act of war, sparking a movement for liberty–a moment that is celebrated to this day. The First Rhode Island Regiment, which fought with distinction in the American Revolution, is the first integrated regiment in American history. And Rhode Island’s Nathanael Greene is widely recognized as being indispensable to General George Washington.
Across our 1,545 square miles of coastline, cities, rivers, and villages, every one of our 39 municipalities holds a unique piece of Rhode Island’s story. Local leaders and volunteers are working to uncover and celebrate the stories that define who we are. From historic milestones to hometown traditions, each community’s contributions matter.
If you remember the excitement of Rhode Island’s Bicentennial in 1976, you understand the power in this commemoration. Once again, we invite you to be part of this historic moment. Our cities and towns have been hard at work highlighting and honoring little pockets of history; from the Capitol to our neighborhood streets.
