A Message from the Superintendent

Hello RIH Families, Students, and Staff,

We are indeed springing ahead and planning for next school year!

At the March 17th Board of Education meeting, the preliminary 2025-26 budget was approved for submission to the Executive County Superintendent. This budget prioritizes our students' success by focusing on strong, data-based systems, enhanced resources, professional development, and student-centered instruction and planning. Key investments include targeted efforts to enhance curriculum and programming, prioritizing facility improvements and school parity, and address achievement gaps in core subjects. The full presentation is available on our website. The final budget vote is scheduled for April 28, 2025.

We appreciated your cooperation during the recent NJGPA and Spring PSAT testing. Looking ahead, you'll receive important details about the 2025 NJSLA next month. Please take time to review this information, as it may affect your student's daily schedule.

FLOW Follies was a resounding success! We're incredibly grateful to all the volunteers who shared their time, talents, and energy to make it such a fun and effective fundraiser.

Finally, be sure to check out our Spring sports schedules. The many outdoor events will provide you a chance to breathe in fresh air and embrace the spirit of our student-athletes!

Yours in Education,

Shauna DeMarco

Students Promote Sobriety

A team of students from Indian Hills created The Sober Mind Project and recently attended the Franklin Lakes REACH (Reducing Addiction Through Care and Help) Meeting. During that meeting, they learned about current issues, projects in their community, and opportunities to grow their campaign. As part of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) these students focus on ways to get involved in healthcare now through participation in community service projects and other events.

The IHHS students identified a problem in the school community, and created a social media campaign to address it. This year's group has chosen the problem of substance use, and are looking to spread awareness to their peers through social media and in-person events. Good Luck to this group as they compete Sunday, March 30th at the HOSA Mental Health Promotion. If they win, they'll be invited to the international leadership conference in June.

Flexing Academic Muscles

Congratulations to the Indian Hills Academic Decathlon team for finishing in 3rd place at the State Finals. They also placed 3rd in the Super Quiz event that concluded the State Competition!

The team that competed at this year’s State Finals include: Andrew Jabaly (captain), Alexander Noerr (assistant captain), Matthew Khanlian, Daphne Bergel, Ryleigh Burchell, Zachary Brothers, Jonas Hoen, Paul Vitolo, Jia Yi Li, Bridgette Brown, Katelyn Douma, Liam Matusevich, Jacob Lee, and Niraj Guhan.

Art & Creative Writing Honored

Faculty advisors Dianna Smith and John Mungiello, along with Editor in Chief, Charlotte Manning were notified of a recent honor bestowed on the 2024 issue of Inscape, Indian Hills High School's art and literary magazine.

It was selected to receive the rank of Excellent in the 2024 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program.

This year, schools in 46 states and five countries nominated 422 student magazines.

REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.

Fields of Excellence

Congratulations to John Maguire and his grounds crew team at Ramapo!

Their excellence in maintaining our fields and playing surfaces is unmatched and is being recognized by the Pioneer Athletics Fields of Excellence Program.

Ramapo High School is one of three schools in the entire state to achieve this award, only seventy-nine winners total were named in the United States!

An award is on the way, we'll update you with a photo when it comes in.

Forensic Studies

Sociology students at Indian Hills got a lesson in forensic science! They explored the deviant minds of Serial Killers and the theories that attempt to explain why they commit the deviant acts they do. The presentation may have sparked interest in the Forensic Science elective!

Read on to hear about this group's trip to the Bergen County Courthouse.

Courthouse Tour

Students toured the Bergen County Courthouse recently.

They visited the courtroom of Justice Ramundo in the Criminal Division and sat in on a pre-trial hearing which was being done virtually.

Being present allowed terms from the students' course work to come to life! Words such as probable cause, defendant, burden of proof, evidence, prosecutor, etc... took on added meaning.

As the tour progressed, students visited a courtroom in the Civil Division. Judge Padovano stepped out of his chambers to welcome the students and speak with them about the different divisions within the courthouse and how Civil Court was different than Criminal Court. He also discussed internship opportunities and other employment opportunities at the courthouse.

The tour ended with a visit to the old jail, (legend says it is haunted) and jury room.

ROAD CLOSURES NOW THROUGH APRIL 2ND

The Wyckoff Avenue closure has already been in place since March 12th. Please be advised that the contractor for Ridgewood Water has modified their plans slightly. This means they will be alternating between this road closure and a closure of Russell Avenue between Wyckoff Avenue and Route 208. Drivers can expect detours, alternating lane closures and general traffic in the area. Be careful out there!

As Prom Night for Indian Hills approaches, we join our Seniors in planning an enjoyable, memorable experience for your son or daughter.
